Aliens: Fireteam Elite Guide | Recon Class Build for Extreme and Insane Difficulty

A guide on how to dominate using the Recon class in Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

The Recon class provides the most powerful team support capabilities in Extreme and Insane difficulties through damage amplification, resource management, and target marking systems. Your role centers around enhancing your entire team's effectiveness while maintaining positioning that maximizes support ability activation.

This guide outlines the perk combinations and tactical approaches that make Recon nearly essential for the highest difficulty success.

Core Perks

Red Is Dead is the most overpowered skill in the game. Your team gets 10% increased damage all the time (yes, all the time).

Got Your Back gives instant reload when you kill an enemy that's targeting a teammate. Back In The Fight gives, on top of reloading, you also get 10% skill cooldown reduction.

Down Range increases far distance damage by 20%. You're going to be in the back most of the time. Down & Out is the universal 20% damage increase perk. You can't stun or knock down enemies, but your teammates still can.

Distracting Howl slows the target marked by PUPS. Blood Hound lowers the marked enemy's defense. It's strategically the best variation of PUPS.

Since your team is going to equip laser sight guns, the only purpose of the default version PUPS is to make targets visible for better visual acquisition.

Guard Dog has decent crowd control, but it's point-defense, not AOE, it's not guaranteed to slow all enemies, unlike other crowd control, such as Tech or Doc.

Best Friend only provides more damage per second, but no crowd control, which is a disadvantage compared to other variations.

Blood Hound not only slows the enemies but reduces enemy defense, achieving crowd control and damage increase at the same time, and most of all, it has unlimited duration and no cooldown, so you can free up skill perks for other skills.

Yes, it only weakens one target, but why do you need to weaken every other enemy that takes less than 1 second to kill and poses no threat to you whatsoever, and when a 2nd high-threat target shows up, you end up in cooldown and unable to use it again?

Optional Builds

Despite being the best support class and almost a must-have for Extreme and Insane, it has the most perk slots due to its abilities not needing any blue perks to buff them.

All out on CQW perks - CQW Shotguns' damage per second is only second by heavy weapons, and such investment yields damage:

Tech CQW Training provides 15% reload and accuracy. Gunner CQW Expertise gives a 15% rate of fire and accuracy. Tech CQW Expertise provides a 15% rate of fire and stability. Recon CQW Expertise gives 15% weak point damage. Lancer CQW Expertise provides 10% weak point damage.

Adrenaline Rush - Drone can heal quite a lot (10 base heal per enemy). Quick Recharge I provides 7% recharge. Extended Duration I gives 7% duration.

If you are confident with teammates' damage output and don't feel like playing aggressively:

Bedside Manner makes you revive twice as fast. Surgeon's Hands means you can't be interrupted during interactions. Perks that give Support Drone duration and recharge speed.

Gameplay Tips

When there are multiple Mutants at close range, do not try to mark them one by one; just shoot them all. The time it takes to mark one Mutant is enough to shoot off 1/4 of its health, which means you end up killing them slower if you try marking them.

Between a Spitter and an elite, mark the Spitter and kill it as soon as possible, then mark the elite. Unless the elite is chasing you, and your teammate is not attacking the Spitter.

During horde fights, stay in the back in order for Got Your Back (instant reload weapons) to trigger properly.

Don't mark Runners, only Mutants and elites. Drop ammo as soon as it's ready when the team stays in position or passing through an area that you are going to visit again.
