Game Guide by Rubaiyat Shihab on Aug 11, 2025
The Phalanx class serves as the front-line tank and crowd control specialist in Extreme and Insane difficulties through shield abilities and enemy management techniques. Your role involves drawing enemy attention while providing protection and disruption capabilities that allow your teammates to operate safely.

This guide covers the defensive strategies and positioning approaches needed to master Phalanx effectiveness in the harshest combat scenarios.
Core Perks
Shield Bash makes a shield melee attack stun the target, use it on the one that grapples. Take A Stand gives each nearby enemy an increase in your damage by 3%. Aftershock leaves a small slowing field after using the skill.
Concussion Pulse provides a larger radius and knocks down targets. Batteries Included gives a 20% recharge. Quick Charge II provides a 13% recharge. Hazard Seals give 25% acid resistance. Down & Out provides 20% more damage to knocked-down targets.

Shotgun focus (on the front): Tech CQW Training gives 15% reload and accuracy. Recon CQW Mastery provides 15% weakpoint damage and range.
Tech CQW Mastery gives a 15% rate of fire and stability. Gunner CQW Mastery provides a 15% rate of fire and accuracy. Lancer CQW Expertise gives 10% weakpoint damage.
Gameplay Tips
Learn to identify which animation or sound effect of the enemies indicates a grapple attack and slam it with shield melee or trigger Shockwave before it grapples.
Enemies gain a period of immunity to stun after shield melee, so only use the slam when you want to interrupt grapple.

Shockwave has a very long starting animation, which can be tricky to time if you want to interrupt grapple, especially on Drones with their high movement speed.
Keep a distance from the rest of your teammates (though in most cases, it's your teammates who need to keep a distance from you) so the enemies lock on to you.

When fighting Pathogens, if the exploding bugs fail to lock on to you and move past you towards your teammate, then explode, both you and your teammate will take damage.
Your shield blocks friendly fire, so feel free to use the U1A2 grenade launcher to blast the ground in front of you while holding a shield to kill surrounding enemies.
