When an encounter stops your progress, and you cannot defeat it, your next step is not persistence but movement.

The map in Death Howl gives you multiple paths forward, and changing direction often creates new options. Progress does not rely on defeating a single encounter at a specific moment.

Choosing Different Encounters

You should open the map and look for encounters you have not completed before. Defeated spirits are marked, which helps you identify unexplored options. Selecting a different encounter can change enemy composition and card rewards. You can also look for a Nest, as these locations lead to encounters that convert defeated spirits into cards.

Exploring Caves and Side Paths

Moving along the edges of paths can reveal caves. Some caves contain encounters, while others do not in Death Howl.

Entering a cave allows you to adjust your deck with a specific goal in mind rather than preparing for open-path encounters. This approach gives you control over what type of fight you face next.

Using Side Quests Effectively

Side quests provide another route forward. Carrying a Quest Card only prevents teleportation. You can still heal at Groves, change decks, and craft new cards.

Quest Cards do not count toward your deck size, and many provide effects that influence encounters. Completing a side quest often requires multiple encounters, which adds cards, materials, and progress along the way.

Targeting Nests for Progress

If you have access to a Nest, consider attempting it. The defending spirits become available as cards once defeated. This expands your card pool and supports future deck changes within the same realm in Death Howl.

Gaining Resources Through Movement

When you move around the map, you usually pick up items that you can use to make things. You can get enough Death Howls to make at least one card by beating an easier fight. This allows small steps to be taken even when the primary goals can't be reached.

Leaving and Re-entering the Map

If no other routes remain, you can leave the area. Most lands have more than one entrance. As long as you stay within the same realm, your progress continues to contribute toward unlocking cards and upgrades tied to that realm in Death Howl.

Adopting a Hunter’s Approach

You are playing a hunter—movement, selection, and timing matter. When one target cannot be taken, you find another. You return later with more options, and then you challenge what previously held you back.
