To see this conclusion, you must finish the game on Nightmare difficulty. This is the toughest path to take, and you cannot use Chapter Select to get it. You need to have Mio’s Spirit Stone on your character before you go to the Ritual Altar.

You get this item by finishing the Sprouting Wings ending and then playing through the rest of the side stories until you finish Mio’s story.

Because enemies on this setting are very strong and mean, you should gather plenty of health items and fully power up your Camera Obscura before the last part of the game.

The Altar and the Time Limit

Put on Mio’s Spirit Stone before you reach the Ritual Altar. If you see Mayu standing there without crying, you are on the right track. You have to fight the Kusabi in two parts and then go into The Abyss to find Sae in FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE.

The big change here is that you must beat Sae in under sixty seconds. If you take too long, the game will give you The Promise ending instead. To win quickly, use your best film like Type-90 or Type Zero and aim for Fatal Frame shots to do the most damage.

The Final Scene

If you defeat Sae fast enough, a prompt lets you grab Mayu’s hand. The sisters fall into the dark, but the ghosts of Sae and Yae catch them and bring them back to the Ritual Altar. A swarm of Crimson Butterflies then clears the ghosts from the village.

After the credits, you get a special scene showing Mio and Mayu sitting on a bench together. If you try this on a lower difficulty, you will only see Mio sitting on the bench by herself in FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE.
