This guide explains the Snared Silk ending in Hollow Knight: Silksong. This ending gives you an alternative way to beat the Grandmother of Silk without having to take her power and become the new king or queen in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

The Alternative Solution

To get this ending, you need to talk to the Caretaker at the start of the Silk and Soul Quest. Important information about a different way to deal with the Grandmother of Silk that doesn't involve using your bind ability is given by the Caretaker. This method offers you hope for truly liberating the land while preserving your authentic self.

The Caretaker tells you that there is only one way to kill the Silk Mother without having to take away her power and become king or queen.

You agree to work with the Caretaker to find this other answer because the Weaver in you wants that massive amount of power. However, your main goal is still to set the kingdom free in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Creating the Trap

You and the Caretaker need to work together to make a special tool that will catch the Grandmother of Silk. To complete this process, you need to find three special items that hold a lot of soul power. Furthermore, you need to find an old tool that was made by Weavers in the past when they tried to defeat this godlike being.

It is only the ancient Weaver tool that can focus energy and make portals using the souls inside the items that are gathered. This item reflects the knowledge and desperate efforts of your ancestors who tried to take the kingdom away from the Grandmother of Silk in the past in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Once you have gathered all the necessary parts, the Caretaker will set up the trap on the platform where your final battle with the Silk Mother will happen. The setup is a typical trap meant to hold the spirit until she is weak enough to escape.

The Unexpected Portal

Activating the old weapon happens when you fight the Grandmother of Silk and make her weak enough for the trap to work. However, instead of creating a standard containment trap as planned, the device opens a portal that leads directly to the bottom of the void beneath Pharloom.

This strange outcome happened because the three NPCs who gave you the soul-powered things were actually Snail Shamans hiding their true identity in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

It is known that these Snail Shamans are very good at manipulating and controlling souls. They can cast powerful spells and keep their links to the void realm open.

The Snail Shamans can control void energy to a certain extent, but not as much as the Pale King or the old kingdom that built the abyss structures.

To be sure they could get rid of the Grandmother of Silk for good, they connected the trap's device to the void itself.

The Void's Intervention

It is the void's natural opposition to pale things, and it wants to eat everything it comes across. During the fight, when the void portal opens, dark tendrils come out and start pulling the Silk Mother down into the abyss.

She tries to drag you down with her, though, because she doesn't want to face her fate by herself in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Lace steps in to save you at this critical moment. With her weapon, she cuts through one of her mother's arms and frees you from the Grandmother of Silk's tight grip.

However, this brave action has a big price: Lace and the Silk Mother are both dragged into the void portal at the same time.

The intense fight and opening of the portal cause significant damage to the area. The process destroys the cradle structure, and you fall because of it, but you emerge alive from the experience in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Lace's Sacrifice

Lace decides to step in because of the complexity of her relationship with her mother and the artificial nature of her life. Lace never truly felt her mother's love because she was made by forcing silk into an empty shell, rather than being born naturally.

There was anger in her heart toward the fake life she was given, which she saw as less than real life.

Additionally, Lace felt envious of your trip because her mother was extremely fond of you. The Grandmother of Silk was very focused on awakening you and addressing you, which made Lace feel ignored and unimportant.

Helping to drag her mother into the void is a way for her to fight against both how fake she is and how much her mother ignores her.

Lace refuses the Grandmother of Silk the power and victory she sought by cutting off her mother's arm and letting the void take them both. Lace made this sacrifice to demonstrate that she wants to prevent her mother from taking over the country, even if it means sacrificing her own life in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

The Kingdom's Liberation

You can kill the Grandmother of Silk in this ending without taking on her power or changing into a new ruler. When the void eats the silk entity, it gets rid of the cause of the kingdom's curse and the controlling threads that have been making life hard for the people of Pharloom.

But this win comes at the terrible cost of Lace's death. She gave her life so that you could escape, and the Silk Mother would lose.

It frees the country, but at the cost of killing the main bad guy and the complicated character who chose to help you in the end, even though she had personal problems in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
