Choosing the right starting class in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando makes the early hours much easier. All four classes are usable, but not all of them are equally friendly when you are still learning map flow, enemy pressure, and defense timing. The best starting class for most players is Strike.
Why Strike Is the Best Starting Class
The Strike class is the simplest of all the classes in the game, and this is precisely why it is so effective in the beginning stages of the game. Its Fireball ability lets you deal fast damage to a large area, enabling you to clear out crowds, protect objectives, and recover when a conflict becomes less organized. This kind of rapid space-making capacity is incredibly helpful while you are still learning how missions progress to higher levels.
Strike also teaches the core rhythm of the game without forcing you into a narrow support or tank role. You can focus on movement, shooting, and timing your ability instead of worrying about complicated positioning or team dependence. For a first class, that balance is hard to beat.

When Operator Becomes the Better Choice
After you have gained a better understanding of the game, Operator becomes a highly appealing option, particularly for solo play. The drone provides you with more control in chaotic situations, helps you split the enemy's attention, and delivers consistent assistance to your team. After you have gained some familiarity with the flow of the mission, it is one of the most powerful classes.
That said, Operator feels better once you understand what the game is asking of you. As a true starting class, Strike is easier to use well from the first mission.

Why Medic and Defender Are Harder First Picks
Medic is powerful, but its value shines most in coordinated co-op. If your team isn't using your healing tools, the class feels less impactful early on. Defender can also be very strong, but it requires better positioning and stronger awareness of where the pressure is coming from.

That makes both classes better second- or third-picks instead of first-picks. They are strong, but they do not smooth out the learning curve as cleanly as Strike does.

The Best First-Class Choice
If you want to start with the best and most powerful class, choose Strike. It lets you control the crowd, is easy to use, and has a lot of value in situations where new players have the most trouble. The next class that you should learn is Operator.
