The Mural Puzzle in Silent Hill f is often the most challenging Puzzle you will face, not because of its mechanics but because of how it ties into the game’s endings. Unlike most Puzzles that adjust to your difficulty setting, this one changes depending on the ending you are progressing toward.

The Puzzle subtly foreshadows the conclusion of your playthrough, which makes it unique within the series. You will encounter the Mural before acquiring the necessary items to solve it. To progress, you must collect three Crests: the Fox Crest, the Black Bird Crest, and the White Bird Crest in Silent Hill f.

These Crests represent the characters Fox Mask and the two sides of Hinako—the placement of these Crests within the Mural changes with each ending path.

Coming Home To Roost

Coming Home To Roost is the default ending in your first playthrough. Even if you avoid taking any Red Capsules, you will still unlock this ending unless you make deliberate choices to pursue another in Silent Hill f.

When you first find the Mural, you will notice two scrolls on either side containing the hints for this version of the Puzzle. The riddle states:

“The Black Bird wishes to take the White Bird. The White Bird wishes to resist. The Fox brings along his followers in triumph. He notices not the two birds in conflict.”

For this riddle, place the Fox Crest at the front of the Mural on the fox holding a fan. This figure leads the rest of the group in the artwork. The Black Bird Crest and White Bird Crest belong on the opposite side, where two foxes appear to be pulling against each other.

Place the Black Bird Crest on the fox to the right, which looks as though it is attempting to march forward, and place the White Bird Crest on the opposing fox resisting it in Silent Hill f.

The Fox’s Wedding

In The Fox’s Wedding ending, Fox Mask succeeds in marrying Hinako, who appears subdued and dressed in a Shiromuku. This is reflected in a different riddle you will find on the same scrolls near the Mural:

“The Black Bird is in the cage at last. The satisfied Fox spreads his fan. The White Bird remains in a daze. All had been swept away as she slept.”

The Fox Crest once again goes to the exact front figur,e spreading its fan. For the Black Bird Crest, place it inside the lantern carried by the fox dressed as a princess, signifying that the bird is caged. The White Bird Crest belongs to the fox sitting cross-legged and appearing dazed, as though waking from a troubling dream in Silent Hill f.

The Fox Wets Its Tail

The Fox Wets Its Tail ending occurs when Hinako escapes her wedding, rejecting the marriage and its associated expectations. In this scenario, Fox Mask—revealed as Kotoyuki Tsuneki—watches silently as she departs.

For this ending, the riddle reads:

“The White Bird flies free from her cage. Her shadow follows close behind her. The Fox raises a lantern as he watches them fly away. There is nothing he can do now.”

In this version, the Fox Crest is placed differently. Insert it above the carriage inside the lantern held by the fox figure, symbolizing the fox observing the scene in Silent Hill f.

The White Bird Crest goes on the bird flying forward, while the Black Bird Crest should be placed directly behind the White Bird Crest, representing its shadow.

Ebisugaoka In Silence

In Ebisugaoka in Silence, the actual ending, Hinako refrains from acting hastily and instead focuses on understanding herself. Both she and Kotoyuki reflect on their circumstances, symbolizing acceptance and freedom of choice in Silent Hill f.

The riddle for this Puzzle is:

“Two chicks confide in one another in their shells. A Fox watches over them in the light of his lantern. Nobody knows when, or even if, the eggs will hatch. Not even the chicks themselves.”

In this set-up, the Fox Crest should once again be in the lantern above the wagon. In this ending, the two bird Crests are close to each other.

Put the Black Bird Crest inside the carriage to show that Hinako is ready to get married, and the White Bird Crest in the light outside the carriage to show that she is prepared to make her own way while still being aware of her feelings in Silent Hill f.
