Lord Balseph serves as the very first major boss encounter in your journey across the twin worlds of Dahna and Rena. As the oppressive ruler of the fiery realm of Orbus Calaglia, he wields a massive axe imbued with fire astral energy, using it to completely subjugate the local populace.

While you might feel confident after clearing out standard guards and weak zeugles on your way up the fortress, this encounter represents a massive difficulty spike. The developers specifically designed this boss fight to test your fundamental understanding of the game's evolving combat mechanics.

Balseph is a lumbering, heavily armored brute who heavily compensates for his sluggish movement with the ability to completely decimate your party's health pool in a single, devastating strike.

This battle essentially functions as a strict examination of your evasion skills, forcing you to abandon mindless button-mashing in favor of calculated strikes and perfectly timed dodges. If you do not learn the rhythm of combat here, the rest of the game will prove incredibly frustrating.

Essential Preparations and Loadout

Charging blindly into the upper levels of Glanymede Castle to face this tyrant without proper preparation is a guaranteed recipe for failure. Before initiating the encounter, you must heavily optimize your two-person party consisting solely of Alphen and Shionne. Fast-traveling back to the liberated settlement of Ulzebek to visit the local blacksmith is absolutely vital.

Upgrading to your highest available weapon tier provides the necessary physical damage output to break through his heavy defenses. You should also aim to reach at least level ten before attempting this fight. The base statistic increases you gain from those early level-ups significantly reduce the chance of Alphen being defeated in one hit.

Equally important to your physical capabilities is your elemental and defensive loadout. You must forge or locate the Garnet accessory within the castle walls and equip it to your characters immediately. The Garnet drastically increases your natural resistance to fire elemental damage, which constitutes the vast majority of Balseph's magical arsenal.

Without this accessory, his explosive attacks will easily bypass your natural defenses. Additionally, you need to fully stock your inventory with essential consumables, including a healthy supply of Apple Gels, Orange Gels, and Life Bottles. Finally, resting at the local inn to cook a hearty meal that provides a flat attack or defense boost will give you the final statistical edge needed to survive the grueling endurance match ahead.

Tactical AI Adjustments and Resource Management

Since you only have a maximum of two party members available for this monumental clash, effectively managing Shionne's artificial intelligence is crucial to your survival. You should take direct control of Alphen to manage his aggressive, close-quarters combat flow, leaving Shionne to operate automatically from a safe distance. However, leaving her on the default behavioral settings can be incredibly risky.

You must enter the Strategy menu before the fight begins and adjust her priorities to strictly focus on healing and defense. This ensures that she will consistently prioritize keeping Alphen's health topped off and only engage in offensive rifle fire when the party is completely secure. Because Shionne will be rapidly burning through your communal Cure Points to cast her restorative magic, monitoring the gauge is entirely your responsibility.

Your Cure Points dictate exactly how many times Shionne can cast healing spells before she is completely locked out of her supportive abilities. Whenever the CP pool begins to run dangerously low, you must manually instruct a character to consume an Orange Gel to restore your magical reserves. Balancing your close-range aggression with this careful resource management ensures that Shionne is always prepared to rescue you from a critical mistake.

If you run out of Cure Points, you will have to rely strictly on Apple Gels to restore flat amounts of health, which can be easily depleted.

Navigating Phase One Mechanics

The opening phase of the battle pits you directly against Balseph in a straightforward duel on the castle rooftop. The tyrant’s moveset is extremely simple and highly telegraphed, requiring immense patience rather than frantic, unpredictable reactions.

His primary form of assault involves raising his massive axe into the air for a brutal downward smash, often immediately followed by a wide, sweeping horizontal strike that covers a massive area around his body. You must resist the urge to stay glued to his model for extended combos. Instead, you should utilize hit-and-run tactics, safely poking him with Alphen's standard artes and immediately dodging backward to avoid his retaliation.

Whenever you see a bright yellow aura illuminate Balseph's body, he is actively charging up a devastating, point-blank explosive blast. He typically relies on this radial attack to punish players who remain in his immediate vicinity for too long, meaning your only defensive option is to sprint entirely out of its area of effect before it detonates.

Furthermore, he will occasionally leap high into the air and come crashing down to crush anything standing directly beneath him. Perfectly dodging these sluggish attacks at the absolute last possible second and then responding with a Counter Edge strike is your safest and most reliable way to chip away at his immense durability without exposing Alphen to unnecessary risk.

Maximizing Shionne's Boost Attack

Throughout the first phase of the fight, you will notice Shionne's Boost Gauge slowly filling up. It is incredibly tempting to use her specialized Boost Attack the moment it becomes available to push extra damage or interrupt a basic swing, but doing so is a massive tactical error. You must hold her Boost Attack strictly in reserve and wait for a highly specific animation from the boss.

Occasionally, Balseph will aggressively launch himself into the air while holding his axe high above his head, preparing to unleash a brutal, homing aerial strike that tracks your movement. The absolute moment he reaches the apex of this jump, you must activate Shionne's Boost Attack.

Her specialized aerial interception will shoot the tyrant out of the sky, nullifying his attack and sending him crashing helplessly onto the stone floor. This successful interruption triggers a generous stagger window, allowing Alphen to unleash his most devastating Flaming Edge combos completely uncontested. Consistently exploiting this exact sequence is the key to safely pushing the tyrant's health bar down and forcing the transition into the second half of the fight.

Surviving the Fire Avatar in Phase Two

Once you manage to reduce Balseph's health significantly, a brief cinematic will play, introducing a terrifying new threat to the battlefield. A colossal, untargetable Fire Avatar manifests directly behind the castle walls, casting an imposing shadow over the arena and radically altering the dynamic of the encounter.

During this second phase, Balseph retains his exact same moveset from the first half, meaning you still have to contend with his axe swings, aerial drops, and explosive blasts. However, you must now simultaneously manage the massive, area-of-effect attacks being launched by the looming elemental giant in the background. Because the Fire Avatar is entirely immune to your weapons and artes, you absolutely cannot damage it directly.

Your primary goal during this chaotic phase is to keep the giant firmly within your camera's view while seamlessly continuing your hit-and-run tactics against Balseph. The avatar will routinely unleash a volley of small tracking fireballs at a specific character, culminating in a massive, singular fireball crashing down onto the arena.

The giant can also slam its massive fists into the ground to create short-range shockwaves, or rain a flurry of massive rocks over a wide radius. You must rely heavily on the vocal warnings provided by your party members, as they will actively call out when the elemental is preparing to strike, giving you precious seconds to reposition and avoid the incoming barrage.

The Final Push and Pyroclasm

As the chaotic second phase drags on and you successfully navigate the overlapping attacks, you will eventually receive a unique, unmissable prompt from Shionne to execute a specialized, scripted Boost Strike against the Fire Avatar itself. Successfully triggering this cinematic attack will temporarily knock the giant unconscious, completely removing its devastating area-of-effect hazards from the equation.

This is your ultimate opportunity to go completely on the offensive and aggressively burn down Balseph's remaining health pool without the constant fear of being crushed by falling rocks. When the tyrant's health drops to roughly twenty percent, he will violently retreat from melee range and begin desperately charging up his signature Mystic Arte, an apocalyptic spell known as Pyroclasm.

During this lengthy casting animation, Balseph is entirely stationary, essentially serving as a massive sitting duck for your strongest, most resource-heavy attacks. You must unleash absolutely everything in your arsenal to deplete his remaining health before he finishes the incantation.

If you fail to interrupt him in time, he will unleash a monumental wave of fire that will likely instantly kill Shionne and leave Alphen critically wounded, often resulting in a frustrating party wipe just moments before victory. Pushing through this final, desperate damage check effectively secures your victory, cementing the liberation of Calaglia and officially kicking off your grand adventure across the remaining realms.
