Valve Steam Machine and Xbox OEM Hybrids: What to Expect in 2026
OEM console PC hybrids are reshaping living room gaming by combining open PC ecosystems with console-style simplicity and performance.

The next generation of hardware is set to change the traditional console model, eliminate closed ecosystems for buying games, and deliver a premier gaming experience in the living room.
Microsoft and Xbox are playing a major role in this paradigm shift in PC gaming, which is expected to take off in 2026.

OEM Console Hybrid PCs Arrive
Valve has announced an upcoming Steam Machine, a console-like PC hybrid designed to usher in the next generation of living room gaming. Alongside this, Microsoft is pushing its own ecosystem with OEM console hybrids. Insiders report that Microsoft has partnered with multiple OEMs to develop Windows 11-based devices that support the Xbox gaming ecosystem.
One of the first Xbox-backed OEM consoles expected next year is reportedly from Asus, under their ROG Republic of Gamers brand. This PC-console hybrid will complement the ROG Xbox Ally handheld, offering next-generation specs to bring high-end gaming directly to your TV with controller support.
Xbox integration will feature the full-screen dashboard currently available on the Xbox Ally, giving you access to the Xbox PC ecosystem and multiple storefronts.
Competition and the Steam Machine
With Valve's Steam Machine announcement, competitors have their work cut out for them. Companies like Razer, Lenovo, Asus, and Corsair will likely develop their own console-like machines. While these machines may not compete directly with Microsoft, they are expected to integrate Xbox and Microsoft storefronts, allowing a unified platform for launching all your PC games.
The Xbox full-screen dashboard provides a controller-friendly interface for accessing multiple PC platforms, Game Pass, and cloud gaming. You can consolidate your library across EA, Ubisoft, GOG, and Steam. This marks a major step in moving gaming setups from corner desks to the family room, connecting controllers directly to your TV without relying on a mouse and keyboard.

PlayStation Moves to PC
The move toward gaming across multiple platforms also affects PlayStation. Rumors say that Sony wants to make PC gaming more integrated with its own games. This would mean that games bought on the PS5 could be played on a PC without having to pay more and keep all of their progress. This is like PlayStation Play Anywhere, which is akin to the Xbox system that has been around for a long time.
PlayStation is pursuing a multiplatform approach to ensure itsits games are available on Steam and Xbox, while still selling the next-generation PlayStation 6. Popular PlayStation exclusives, many of which are now on Steam, will be playable on any device that supports Windows or SteamOS, expanding accessibility across OEM console hybrids.
Limitations of the First Wave
AMD Xbox partner chiplet won't be in the first wave of OEM console hybrids in 2026. This means the Xbox console architecture that lets licensed console games run on multiple devices won't be released until 2027.
Because of this, games like Grand Theft Auto 6, which was first announced for Xbox Series and PS5, will not be available on these PC-console hybrids at launch.
Valve's Steam Machine Specs
Steam Machine by Valve is a smaller, customisable version of the Xbox Series X. It has detachable faceplates, LED lighting, and a new Steam controller. The CPU is an AMD Zen 4 six-core chip that can handle high-frame-rate gaming.
The GPU is a little better, but it might struggle with titles coming out next. Early hardware tests indicate 1080p or 1440p 60 gameplay on demanding titles. Pricing is expected to be around $600–$700, similar to current console price hikes.

Why Choose OEM Console Hybrids?
Some may ask why they would buy a closed-box hybrid when building a PC is an option. The appeal lies in bringing a PC gaming experience directly to the couch and big-screen TV. Gaming handhelds have proved that people want to play games away from their desks, and OEM console hybrids make it easier to connect high-end gaming gear to living room sets.
People who love gaming may still spend $1,000 to $2,000 on high-end PCs. Still, hybrids make gaming more accessible to a wider range of players and support gaming across platforms and entitlements.
Future of Gaming
Valve's Steam Machine could bring many new players to this new way of playing games if it is priced reasonably. Xbox and PlayStation are working on their ecosystems on a lot of different platforms, which is making exclusivity less relevant over time.
Gamers might look forward to more freedom, bigger libraries, and the ability to play games on any platform without constraints.
