Gears of War 3 Trailer Debuts on Jimmy Fallon

News by Seth Golovin on  Apr 14, 2010

Last night Epic Games design lead Cliff Bleszinski appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The outspoken designer talked about his start in the industry and then proceeded to officially reveal that Gears of War 3 will arrive next April. He then presented the first trailer for the game which showed series protagonists Dom and Marcus fighting a huge horde of locusts against the backdrop of hundreds of humans who had been turned to ash. Fittingly, the trailer was entitled Ashes to Ashes and also featured a female Cog, the first for the series, and a large tentacle monster which is most likely an offshoot of the mutated Locust fought at the end of the second Gears game.

The trailer is set to the haunting Heron Blue by Sun Kil Moon. This is the third time in as many games that Microsoft and Epic have used a popular and acclaimed ethereal song to accompany the footage in a Gears of War trailer. The first game received a trailer set to the Gary Jules cover of Mad World, while the second game was marketed with a trailer set to Devotchka's How It Ends.

Several hours later Microsoft issued a press release saying that Gears of War 3 would ship on April 5, 2011 in the US, April 7, 2011 in Japan, and April 8, 2011 in Europe. The publisher also revealed that the series has to date shipped 12 million units. As for the game's story, Microsoft claimed that the final human stronghold that was saved at the end of Gears of War 2 has been destroyed and Marcus and Co are fighting the final fight against the Locust Horde. Of note, the trailer for Gears of War 3 concludes with the words Brothers to The End, after which the first two words fade, leaving just The End.
