Mortal Kombat is a video game series that has earned Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios a combined $1 billion since the initial arcade game was released on October 8, 1992. The Mortal Kombat franchise has been around for 30 years, and it has become a cultural mainstay thanks to the series' best-in-class gameplay, iconic characters, and immersive cinematic experience. The series has also won numerous awards, including the D.I.C.E. Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, The Game Award, and many others. Mortal Kombat 11, the newest installment in the series, has sold over 15 million copies globally and has been downloaded over 150 million times.
In celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary, a new video has been published that highlights Mortal Kombat's cultural impact spanning three decades of media, from video games to cinema to animation. This commemorative video spans 30 years of bone-crushing content, from the first Mortal Kombat video game in 1992 to Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in 2020, and from the first live-action Mortal Kombat film in 1995 to the reimagined Mortal Kombat movie in 2021. It also features a visual spotlight on iconic Mortal Kombat characters and their various incarnations, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Liu Kang. Additionally, new artwork commemorating Mortal Kombat's 30th anniversary was released today, including various game modes, plot events, characters, and finishing techniques from the game's history represented in the form of the famous dragon logo.
From October 7th to 11th, Christopher Lambert's face and voice will be included in Mortal Kombat Mobile as the character Klassic Movie Raiden, celebrating the anniversary of the 1995 film. Moreover, from October 7-14, players who regularly access the mobile game will get anniversary presents at no cost and have access to a plethora of new features.
Meanwhile, on October 9 for Digital and October 11 for 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, the third animated feature in the series. Mortal Kombat (2021 film), Mortal Kombat (1995 film), Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2013 web series), Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms (2021 animated film), and Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge (2020 animated film) are all currently streaming on HBO Max, and Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (1996 animated series) can be purchased on digital platforms.
