Nintendo of America Publishing Fatal Frame Spin-off

Nintendo of America announced via press release Jan. 17 that it will publish the Fatal Frame spin-off, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, in North America.
Developed by Nintendo and Tecmo Koei Games, Spirit Camera is an augmented reality game available exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. The press release promises a “spellbinding storyline” that integrates players’ “pictures and surroundings to create a personalized horror experience.”
The story involves a girl named Maya, hiding in a haunted house after a mysterious woman in black placed a curse upon her. Using the “Diary of Faces,” a 16-page AR book included with the game, players will interact with Maya’s world to break the curse.

Use the 3DS's AR capabilities to fight spirits and break a malevolent curse.
With the AR book, players will use the 3DS’s built-in cameras to experience AR “visions” and fight off attacking spirits. This feature sounds a bit like 1st Playable’s The Hidden, which released last November.
Three other modes feature distinct gameplay types. In Spirit Photography, players take snapshots and watch “haunting visions” unfold within. In Spirit Check, they photograph people and expose the apparitions that surround them. Spirit Challenge, meanwhile, lets them attach a friend’s (or an enemy’s) face to a spirit and then fight it.
Spirit Camera features additional modes in which players can use the AR Book for hide-and-seek and memory challenges, “all with a supernatural twist.”
Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir will be available for Nintendo 3DS April 13.
