PlayStation Signals the End of PS4 as PS5-Only Games Take Over

From PS5-only blockbusters to looming price hikes, Sony’s latest console message makes one thing clear — the PlayStation 4 era is officially ending.

Sony is no longer being sneaky. On the off chance that you still turn on your PlayStation 4, you may have seen a new message that seems less like an update and more like a straight push. The company is telling PS4 buyers outright that they should upgrade to the PS5, and this time it doesn't sound like empty marketing talk.

The message shows up on PS4s as a "breaking news" alert and lists a bunch of new and future games, encouraging players to think about making the switch. It talks about recent hits from 2025 like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Arc Raiders, and Ghost of Yōtei. It also hints at big games coming out in 2026 like Saros, 007 First Light, and Neo 3. There is a simple pitch in the middle: now is the best time to get a PS5.

It's even more direct because it has a QR code that goes straight to PlayStation Direct, where Sony talks about the PS5's pros and cons. This method is fairly easy to understand, and it's clearly aimed at PS4 players who have been taking it easy because, until recently, they could. Sony let the PS4 stay out longer than most system generations for a long time. As long as many big games kept coming out on old hardware, there wasn't much reason for players to rush to get new hardware. That cushion, on the other hand, is no longer there.

The line for PS5 has only been crossed.

Things changed a lot last year. Some of the most anticipated movies and games skipped PS4 altogether. Some games, like Expedition 33, Ghost of Yōtei, Arc Raiders, Saros, Resident Evil Requiem, and Monster Hunter Wilds, could only be played on the PlayStation 5. This change might not have been noticed by players who don't keep up with game news, especially if they weren't watching YouTube breakdowns or talking to friends who own a PS5.

That's why Sony's messages are important. Even if they are just selling their own hardware, hearing it from the platform owner gives it more weight. That's what the company is saying: if you're still on PS4, you're about to miss out. And that's not even a stretch.

There is also a financial reason why the time is more important. Prices for hardware are going down across the tech business, mostly because the cost of memory is going up. Before the end of the year, RAM prices are likely to go up again, which will affect how much it costs to make consoles. Once Sony uses up its current stock, it's much more likely that the price of the PS5 will go up again.

Sony has already raised prices in a few places, but compared to other companies and the rising cost of PC gear, it has done pretty well. That might not last for long.

Sony wants you to get a PS5 now.

If you own a PS4 and are even slightly interested in future exclusive games, you might save money by upgrading sooner rather than later. Right now, stores like GameStop are giving a lot of money for used PS4 and Xbox machines, which could make the switch a lot cheaper.

Many gamers like to keep old gear, but the PS4 isn't as important as it used to be because the PS5 is almost completely backward compatible. A lot of the games you have on PS4 can be played on PS5, and they usually load faster, run smoother, and look better. There isn't as much reason to keep the old machine plugged in as there was during the PS3 era.

When you look at how Sony handles older systems and services, you can see its direction even more clearly. A recent problem with streaming PS3 games on PlayStation Plus Premium has allegedly not been fixed for weeks, and there are signs that the feature will soon be taken away completely. Sony's main focus is on new hardware, and the theme stays the same.

Not only are the games and prices better on the PS5, but the experience itself is too. The DualSense joystick is one item that really jumps out. A lot of gamers say that Sony's DualShock 4 is their greatest regular controller, but the DualSense offers features that transform the way games feel.

Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback aren't simply gimmicks; when utilized effectively, they can make the experience feel more real. Many users who switch use the DualSense on more than one device, such as a PS5, PS5 Pro, or PC. People who used to swear by the DualShock 4 now appreciate it for a reason.

It's also clear that upcoming games are made with this tech in mind. Even though Saros isn't the most anticipated game, it's likely to get good reviews and make heavy use of PS5 features, similar to how Returnal did before it. These kinds of games just can't be played on older hardware without big changes.

And then there are the big guns. Marvel's Wolverine is said to be coming out this year, but it won't even try to run on PS4. And Grand Theft Auto VI, which might be the biggest game release of all time, is watching over everything. Rockstar has made it clear that GTA 6 will not be coming to PS4.

That might be enough to make a difference for millions of people.

Sony's message, even if it's direct, doesn't give the wrong impression. The PS4 had a great run, but now the games business has moved on. Now that PS5-only games are the standard, hardware costs are likely to go up, and backward compatibility makes the switch easier, the company's advice is simple and hard to argue with.

Sony isn't lying to you anymore if you have a PS4, the money, and a desire to play the next big hit games. It's really time to move up.
