It has been a busy few days for Rick and Morty and High on Life news. Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the popular animated show and the founder of the game studio Squanch Games, which made High on Life, has been charged with domestic battery and false imprisonment. In the wake of this news, both Adult Swim and Squanch Games have severed ties with the creator.
These assault allegations emerged in the public eye a few days ago, but they are actually from all the way back in 2020. The case has been tied up in various legal proceedings since then but was originally reported on by NBC News only a couple days back. According to Roiland’s attorney, he has plead non-guilty and will look towards clearing his name of these allegations over the coming months as the trial nears. This is, seemingly, how long trials take to come together.
However, in the meantime, in light of the allegations, Adult Swim announced that it had severed its connection with Roiland via the official Rick and Morty Twitter account, and the statement ends by stating that the team are at work on season 7 regardless of this news. Whereas Squanch Games has also announced on Twitter that Roiland handed in his resignation but the company also stated that “the passionate team at Squanch will keep developing games we know our fans will love” and that High on Life will continue to receive support too.
In light of this, there have been concerns about what will happen to Rick and Morty now that the lead voice actor for the two eponymous characters is no longer working on the series. We will have to wait and see what exactly will happen with the franchise, but it is set to continue production. Perhaps new voice actors will be introduced, but there has been no further information provided thus far. Only time will tell.
