Sony Launches First Ever Console Free-To-Play (Free Realms) March 29

Every day, the fine line between consoles and PC’s are blurring and fading away. Barring a PC will always have a nifty advantage of updating it and enhancing experiences without removing other OS features; pretty much anything else is getting to be the same. Next to the recent firmware update giving only Playstation Plus subscribers access to save files on a cloud feature, Sony is now breaking ground on another frontier.

Starting March 29, Sony Online entertainment (SOE) will be bringing the massive RPG experience Free Realms to consoles. This will mark history as the first free-to-play MMORPG ever to release on any console; after DC Universe Online being the first PS3 MMO. The latter should’ve gone to Final Fantasy XIV, but it seems that iteration has been shoved in a corner somewhere.

Free Realms isn’t a new game however, as it was released for PC and Mac in 2009 and has since amassed nearly 17 million registered players. That’s not a bad feat for a family friendly journey. And while Free Realms doesn’t boast a macho appearance like some games, at least the experience is vast and extensive. Next to regular combat and questing capabilities, players can waste a ton of time on a whole slew of side activities, with a choice of 15 jobs to boot. When you get bored of owning evil, you can try your hand at mini-games, cards, soccer, racing or even demolition derby. This makes Free Realms a gratis encounter to at least try out and see what it has to offer. But you can always check out the trailer and see for yourself.

Of course, there’s a loophole in it all, how else would SOE make money? Jobs levels only go up to 4 for free players and to unlock the level 20 cap you’ll need to pay. The features state: “Memberships are offered in terms of one month, three months, six months and lifetime, which is valid for the life of the game. Members and free players can also purchase items through micro-transactions.” So you know all those extensive mini-games might also have a few paid tricks up their sleeves.

Still, with all the features Free Realms offer console players for no money whatsoever, apart from your internet provider bills, this first ever introduction to the endless horizon that is the MMO genre is one to look out for.
