System Shock is often considered one of the most ground-breaking titles in gaming. Today, OtherSide Entertainment, who has had difficulty with System Shock 3's development especially when Starbreeze Studios sold back the distribution rights to the game, confirmed that Tencent now owns the franchise.

1/2 We are happy to announce that Tencent will be taking the #SystemShock franchise forward.

As expected, fans are not happy with this decision. Specifically, since Tencent has a history of heavily monetizing products and heavy ties with the Chinese government. In addition, Tencent has been repeatedly accused of illegal data collection from those who use their products and services.

This is likely due to funding. As OtherSide stated in the same thread:

2/2 As a smaller Indie studio, it had been challenging for us to carry the project on our own. We believe Tencent's deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights.

This is a shocking turn of events as System Shock holds a special place for many gamers. With Tencent now in control, it's hard to say what will become of the franchise.
