Still conflicting reports about Hideaki Kojima's Physint budget, XBOX talking about GTA 6 preorders and making some changes to their gaming business.

A new round of XBOX -related discussions has brought several stories to light, including conflicting reports about the budget for Hideaki Kojima’s Physint. Different figures have been circulating around the game, with reports and claims placing its potential cost anywhere between $300 million and $600 million.
However, the available information remains unclear, and multiple sources have now suggested that the figure XBOX agreed to pay for the project is significantly lower than the numbers being discussed online. This has made it even harder to determine which of the reported figures, if any, reflects the actual deal between XBOX and Kojima Productions.

The budget discussion appears to have started circulating heavily around the Tokyo Game Show, where different figures were reportedly being mentioned.
Some claims put the game's budget at around $400 million, while others suggested an amount closer to $300 million or as high as $600 million. The result is a huge disconnect between the numbers being reported, and it's hard to get a read on what the real cost of Physint might be. Especially since the game is still in production and it's not clear how much it will cost.
Christopher Ding has been linked to the $400 million figure, and his comments have fueled the ongoing conversation. However, Jason Schreier was asked about the reported number and cautioned against treating it as fact without documentation or confirmation from multiple firsthand sources.
Then there’s the fact, as Schreier points out, that several different figures can get muddled together here: what the game was initially pitched at PlayStation, what it was closer to at development, and what it could have been if certain A-list actors had been attached.
The article also covers how much XBOX ultimately agreed to pay for the project, along with what Physint will actually cost by the time it is finished.
Those numbers don't necessarily have to match, especially for a project still in development. According to someone described as having firsthand knowledge of the XBOX deal, the company signed Physint for significantly less than the widely reported $400 million figure, adding another layer of uncertainty.
Ding later addressed the discussion as well, explaining that the information he had regarding Physint's budget was already included in an article published for his paid subscribers. He said subsequent comments referenced that same information and added that he had since been told XBOX is paying considerably less than the figure being discussed.
The situation gets even more complicated because other reports suggest the $400 million figure could relate to what Sony and PlayStation might have been responsible for before the deal was canceled. Sources cited in the discussion reportedly claimed that XBOX and Kojima are building their XBOX projects on a fraction of that reported amount.

The uncertainty has also led to comparisons with other rumors that have circulated around Kojima's projects. There has been some discussion about another rumored Kojima project, but the claim itself is unconfirmed. The larger problem is that rumors can spread quickly through the industry with little in the way of documentation, especially if they involve big developers, publishers, and high-profile games.
The conversation is also a reminder that even seasoned industry reporters can get information wrong. The discussion referenced a previous mistake involving the price of the new ROG XBOX hardware, where a reported figure was off by $100. They found the mistake, corrected the information, and apologized.
The Physint situation is particularly difficult because a difference between $300 million and $600 million is enormous. When a story spans such a wide range, it becomes particularly challenging to know whether the figures refer to the same thing or to different stages of the game's development and negotiations.
Elsewhere in the XBOX ecosystem, Microsoft has been talking about Minecraft and its continued growth.
During Minecraft Live, XBOX highlighted the upcoming Dungeons 2 content, described as the game's first new dimension in more than 14 years, along with new tools and features designed to give creators more ways to build. The company also pointed to Minecraft's enormous player base, saying more than 300,000 people play the game for the first time on an average day.
Minecraft has also sold over 425 million copies after more than 17 years on the market. Those figures show how the game continues to attract new players while also providing longtime players with additional content to explore. The latest announcements have drawn attention because they come as XBOX faces questions about layoffs and the broader direction of its gaming business.
Another major topic has been GTA 6 pre-orders. XBOX has previously said that it is pleased with the number of pre-orders the game is receiving on its platform, but discussions about the company's expectations have continued to return. Microsoft has addressed the situation multiple times, with XBOX saying GTA 6 pre-orders are performing well and that the game is breaking records for the company.

XBOX has also said that it expects to break additional records as the release approaches. The company explained that its internal analysis shows its share of GTA 6 pre-orders is matching its share of the console market. That distinction matters because XBOX has a smaller console install base than PlayStation, so the raw number of pre-orders on XBOX would naturally differ from the number on PlayStation.
The discussion also highlighted the substantial difference in console sales between the two platforms.
PlayStation has sold over 100 million consoles, while XBOX 's installed base is much smaller, according to the numbers mentioned in the discussion. The overall GTA 6 pre-orders across the platforms wouldn’t tell the whole story of how the game is performing on XBOX, unless you factor the respective market shares in.
XBOX is also testing some smaller features for its gaming platform. One of them is a weekly gaming streak system that rewards players for playing on three different days during the week. Streak counters can appear on profiles, the XBOX Guide, and the home interface, and the feature is separate from the existing Game Pass streak system.
The company has also introduced new achievement-related features for PC users. One update includes a new visual style for certain achievements, with a more distinctive animation and presentation. An XBOX achievement connected to completing a game and reaching 100% gamerscore is also expected to receive its own reward presentation, adding another small feature for players who enjoy completing their games.
But not all of the recent XBOX news has been good. Gears of War: E-Day has faced layoffs, and the game’s story director is among those who lost their roles. Juan Cowan publicly announced that he was part of the latest round of layoffs and is searching for new opportunities, including work in narrative direction and storytelling.
World's Edge, the studio behind the Age of Empires series, has also seen significant changes. The studio's next game has reportedly been canceled, and nearly half of its staff were laid off before Activision took over the project. The situation has added to broader concerns about Microsoft's ongoing restructuring across its gaming operations.

Former XBOX employees and industry figures have also publicly criticized the layoffs.
Following the most recent shake-up, former World's Edge director Shannon Loftis went public with criticism of Asha Sharma. The criticism came shortly after Sharma spoke about the need for clear leadership, adding another layer to the conversation about the layoffs and how XBOX is communicating its decisions.
The broader XBOX situation therefore remains a mixture of new projects, platform updates, major releases, and significant organizational changes. “Physint is still a hot topic due to conflicting reports on its budget, and XBOX says GTA 6 pre-orders are doing well in comparison to its share of the console market.
For Physint specifically, the biggest unanswered question remains how much the project will actually cost. Reports have placed the figure anywhere from hundreds of millions of dollars, but the available information does not establish a definitive final number. Until more concrete information becomes available, the safest conclusion from the current reports is that the widely discussed $400 million figure should not automatically be treated as XBOX's actual investment in the game.
