Doom: The Dark Ages Guide | How To Beat The Hell Carriers

In the Break the Cathedral Force Field quest in Doom: The Dark Ages, you are tasked with destroying four Hell Carriers. This process is actually pretty simple once you understand the mechanics.

You begin with the closest Hell Carrier on your right. The objective is to destroy its main cannon, which is shielded at first. In order to take those shields down, you'll need to unlock plasma rounds.

Unlocking the Plasma Cannon

To unlock plasma rounds, you need to perform a perfect dodge. Doing so successfully grants you access to plasma ammunition. Once you've done a perfect dodge, you can use the plasma cannon to begin damaging the Hell Carrier.

Focus on systematically hitting the shielded areas until they collapse. This will then unlock the landing zone for that particular Hell Carrier.

Boarding and Clearing the Hell Carrier

Once the landing zone is accessible, enter the ship. Inside, you'll encounter a few enemies that need to be dealt with quickly. As you proceed, you'll notice that the interior design of the ship is actually quite detailed.  

If you're interested, there's a sensible shrine located inside as well, but you can choose to ignore it and keep moving forward toward the ship's core.

Make your way up and forward, using any accelerators if needed, until you reach a locked door. Break through it, then jump down one level and again another level until you encounter the main enemy.

This boss-type figure is armored and requires you to weaken the armor before going in for a melee finish.

Destroying the Core

Once the boss is defeated and you receive the bonus to your max ammo, proceed to the core area. You'll encounter a strange face-like object that appears for the first time. Charge into it and destroy it. This action completes the destruction of the Hell Carrier and deactivates one segment of the force field.

By repeating this process for the remaining Hell Carriers, you'll break the entire cathedral force field.
