In Dragon Quest II: HD-2D Remake, each key you get serves a specific purpose by unlocking certain types of chests and doors across the world. Knowing where to use each one helps you open new areas, find hidden treasures, and continue through the story smoothly.

Since each key corresponds to a particular colour of lock, you should make use of them as you revisit earlier regions throughout your journey in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake.

Using the Thief’s Key

The Thief’s Key lets you open red-colored chests and doors. After getting this key, you can use it in several locations, including the Sea Cave, Tower of the Moon, Burrowell, Lighthouse, Dragonlord’s Castle, Tantegel Castle, Rippleport, Leftwyne, and Midenhall.

With it, you can access areas that were locked before, revealing treasure and other important paths in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake.

Using the Magic Key

The Magic Key is used to open blue-colored chests and doors. You can make use of it in locations such as the Shrine West of Moonbrooke, Hall of Hargon, Burrowell, Dirkandor, Slewse, Tantegel Castle, Moonahan, Gwaelin’s Gate, Cannock, Midenhall, and the Shrine South of Midenhall.

By using this key, you can access previously sealed sections and collect items that aid your progress.

Using the Ultimate Key

The Ultimate Key opens green-colored chests and doors. You can use it in the Hall of Hargon, Burrowell, Zahan, Dirkandor, Beran, Slewse, Moonbrooke Castle, Moonahan, Cannock, and Midenhall.

This key becomes important later in the game, as it grants entry to restricted areas that hold valuable treasures and important routes for your adventure in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake.

Using the Floodgate Key

The Floodgate Key is needed to reach the Tower of the Moon. You can use it to open the floodgates northwest of Slewse. To find them, go around the back of the Item Shop located on the east side of the village. When you open the gates, the river will overflow, allowing you to sail a ship to the Tower of the Moon in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake.

Using the Misplaced Key

The Misplaced Key is used in Moonahan after the events in the Den of Thieves. This key is directly tied to the story, so you will use it naturally as you progress through the main quest. You don't need to worry about missing it, as it is required to advance the storyline.
