Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Guide | How to Play Braver Effectively

Quick, practical Braver tips, rotations, and skill choices to boost DPS and survivability in PSO2: NGS.

Braver is a hybrid katana-and-bow class that excels at switching between close burst and long-range pressure. This guide explains weapon mechanics, recommended skill choices, rotations for single-target and AOE, and useful subclass picks so you can maximize output while managing PP and mobility.

Braver Overview

The class blends melee aggression with ranged control: the Katana provides fast, high-burst combos and area hits, while the Bow covers long-range targets and keeps pressure when foes fly or kite. Learning to alternate weapons and use Brave Combat windows effectively is central to strong Braver play.

Katana Overview

The Katana is a short-range weapon built around multi-stage Photon Arts (PAs) that can be chained for big burst damage. Key Katana PAs include Silverleaf Storm, Lotus Lightning, and Iris Gale.

Silverleaf Storm delivers quick slashes ending in a powerful finish and is excellent for mobility and re-positioning. Lotus Lightning roots the user but hits in a line for very high single-target damage when aimed correctly.

Iris Gale is the main Katana AOE: early stages are narrow while later stages provide strong 360° vertical coverage. Confirmed Katana PA details and behavior can be found on New Genesis PA references.

Bow Overview

The Bow offers three chargeable Photon Arts that change properties with charge level and can be followed by a weapon-action + direction input to slide and deliver an extra attack. The primary Bow PAs are Flex Arrow, Frenzied Firework, and Dimensional Ray.

Flex Arrow is a single-target shot with multiple charge states for penetration and burst. Frenzied Firework scatters arrows into an AOE and becomes a close-range shotgun-like blast when fully charged.

Dimensional Ray spawns an arrow field when uncharged and grants homing stalk attacks at full charge that pair well with PAs. These Bow PAs are the backbone of ranged rotations.

Skill Tree & SP Distribution (practical notes)

Braver has many skills; prioritize spending SP to enable consistent Brave Combat usage, maximize short-cycle options, and invest in PP-friendly passives.

A balanced setup often puts at least one point in many utility nodes while heavily investing in Brave Combat Short Cycle, Brave Combat Final Bonus, and the key passives that reduce PP cost or give PP on counters.

Skills like Fearless Attitude, Katana PA Combo Retention, and the Bow elude-related skill markedly change playstyle and PP management. For accurate skill names and effects, consult the Braver skill-tree references.

Brave Combat & Skills Explanations

Brave Combat is the primary active that should be used frequently; with Short Cycle it offers a high uptime (e.g., around 15 seconds every 60 seconds if fully set) and reduces PP consumption while increasing PP recovery from attacks.

Reusing Brave Combat during its active duration triggers a free high-damage finisher — never skip the finisher. Brave Combat Close Range enables Katana to close distance via normal attacks, and the Bow counterpart grants knockback immunity and launch resistance during certain PA windows.

Passive skills such as Fearless Attitude (an automatic counter-window after attacks), Katana PA Combo Retention (lets PA stages be mixed/retained for flexible combos), and Bow Elusion Plus (helps PP and adds damage via weapon-action slide attacks) are highly recommended for reliable PP and combo flow.

Thoughts & Theorycrafting (playstyle guidance)

Specializing in only one weapon is viable but suboptimal; the class is designed for katana and bow to cover each other’s weaknesses. The Katana offers potent burst and close-range DPS but can struggle with vertical tracking and range; the Bow covers aerial or distant targets but tends to lack the immediate burst of melee.

Using Step Dodge + Attack and practicing step-dodge counters helps mitigate katana’s mobility limits. Experiment with weapon swapping mid-fight: use katana when in range and switch to bow when the enemy kites or goes airborne.

Damage Rotations

For Bow (single-target): drop an uncharged Dimensional Ray to set field pressure, then spam Flex Arrow while inserting weapon-action slides after each shot. For AOE, replace Flex Arrow with Frenzied Firework, charging or not depending on encounter needs.

For Katana (single-target): a comfortable rotation is two Lotus Lightning uses followed by the third stage of Silverleaf Storm — two Lotus steps take about two seconds and lock the user, followed by Silverleaf’s mobility and faster recovery. Alternatively begin with Silverleaf Storm, flow into Lotus Lightning Stage 2, then finish with Silverleaf Stage 3 depending on enemy movement and counter-fishing.

For Katana AOE: use a short release of a PA (to skip awkward initial hitboxes) and then perform Stage 2 and 3 of Iris Gale; this preserves PP because Iris Gale costs more PP on first stage than using a short Silverleaf to skip the weak first hit. Always line Brave Combat usage with brake phases or high-hit windows and be sure to trigger the finisher for free damage and healing.

Subclass Recommendations

Braver tends to be PP-hungry. Subclassing to Gunner is a solid choice because of active PP recovery tools. Force can be useful for PP conversion or when using techs and hybrid setups, especially for overgeared farming where sustain matters. Consider multi-weapon setups (for example, pairing with a Wired Lance build) to cover specific gaps, but prioritize subclass skills that help PP sustain and recovery.
