Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Guide | How to Play Bouncer Effectively

A concise, practical Bouncer guide for PSO2: NGS that covers weapons, photon arts, rotations, and subclass picks.

The Bouncer is a hybrid support-melee class built to force enemies into down states quickly. This guide explains the class in clear, usable terms so you can start downing bosses and clearing content efficiently. The focus is on practical mechanics: weapons, photon arts (PAs), weapon actions, skill considerations, and simple rotations that scale to endgame content.

What the Bouncer Does

The Bouncer excels at creating frequent physical and elemental downs. This class blends melee and tech mechanics to apply powerful burst windows and rapid downing. The kit rewards aggression and smart use of weapon actions and techniques, making Bouncer a top choice for dungeons and high-damage boss phases.

Soaring Blades Overview

Soaring Blades function like dual blades that fire Photon Blades via their weapon action. The weapon action fires blades that increase PP recovery on normal attacks and can be held to continuously fire at targets.

Activating Fanatic Blade boosts the firing rate and power for a short window. The three main PAs are Destructive Stork, Rampaging Harrier, and Roaring Pheasant. Destructive Stork is an AOE that moves forward and can cancel into a vertical slash if the PA button is tapped again.

Rampaging Harrier is a combo slash that ends with a rain of blades and can be altered to shoot a flurry of blades by canceling. Roaring Pheasant is a gap-closing spin that travels a long distance before a final slash; tapping the PA early turns it into a stationary spinning attack.

Most PAs offer a small invulnerability frame when the PA button is pressed a second time, and Photon Blades provide strong PP sustain and burst when combined with Fanatic Blade.

Jet Boots Overview

Jet Boots are a tech-centric, highly mobile weapon that converts techniques into elemental weapon hits and procs Zonde-Clad/Barta Blot style effects through PA usage. Holding the normal attack performs a rapid kick chain that ends in a powerful finisher.

The weapon action functions as a generous counter that can be used during PAs, and many Jet Boots variant PAs cast techniques as part of their animation. Casting a technique alters the elemental property of attacks, indicated visually around the feet, and casting techniques gives a quick “cut-style” gap closer when followed by a normal attack timed with a horizontal flash.

The core Jet Boots PAs are Spinning Gust, Fierce Wave, and Violent Gale. Spinning Gust is a gap closer with vertical strikes and a strong final kick that boosts Jetsweep Jolt gauge and can act as a guard point.

Fierce Wave is a stationary PA that fires crescent slashes and scales when held. Violent Gale is an AOE volley of horizontal kicks that, when held, ends in a singular guard-point hit that pushes the user backward while substantially charging Jetsweep Jolt.

Photon Arts, Weapon Actions, and Techniques

Weapon actions are central to Bouncer performance. Use the Soaring Blades weapon action to apply Photon Blades to an enemy, increasing PP recovery on normals and enabling higher sustained output when Fanatic Blade is active.

Use the Jet Boots weapon action liberally as a defensive counter and to trigger variant techniques for element matching. Techniques cast during Jet Boots PAs change attack elements and help proc Elemental Decline and Physical Decline class skills.

Casting techniques also yields small gap closers, opening quick burst windows. Techniques that spawn Zonde-Clad or Barta Blot should be used to charge and explode those effects for added damage.

Skill Tree and SP Distribution Guidance

Prioritize core Bouncer nodes that improve down application, Photon Blade PP recovery, and Fanatic Blade augments. If planning to main both weapons, avoid skipping essential Bouncer skills; skill resets are limited.

If the intention is to focus on one weapon, shift remaining points to reinforce the chosen playstyle, but be mindful that respec options are scarce. Invest in at least one point in the final four nodes that grant Defeat Amplifier and Partial Destroy Advantage for their broad benefits.

Playstyle Notes and Theorycrafting

The Bouncer thrives on downing bosses rapidly and repeatedly. The class scales into high-tier content thanks to reliable down mechanics and short, high-damage cooldowns.

Jet Boots provide excellent mobility, elemental flexibility, and defensive windows through i-frames and guard points, which makes them a powerful, versatile option in the current meta.

Soaring Blades deliver solid damage and PP sustain via Photon Blades, but offer fewer defensive tools than Jet Boots and can feel more fragile in prolonged exchanges. Despite this, Soaring Blades retain strong burst potential, and weapon action timing remains a key defensive and offensive tool.

Practical PA Usage — Jet Boots

Match techniques to the boss weakness to maximize elemental downs and damage. Use Spinning Gust to quickly build Jetsweep Jolt and keep the gauge cycling every 20 seconds for additional damage windows.

For burst phases, fully hold Fierce Wave then follow with held normal attacks to thread together a reliable and easy-to-execute burst rotation. Gap closing is available through casting a technique followed by the quick-cut normal attack or by using Spinning Gust as a direct approach. Keep the weapon action active as much as possible for its counter and utility.

Practical PA Usage — Soaring Blades

Use the weapon action to embed a Photon Blade into the target, then chain Destructive Stork and Roaring Pheasant for consistent damage. Tap Roaring Pheasant once for a fast gap close, but note it will continue until the final slash connects.

Rampaging Harrier works well as a double-tap variant for movement into the enemy or as a single-tap for ranged follow-up. Activate Fanatic Blade on cooldown for a 15-second window of machine-gun-like Photon Blade fire and hold the weapon action to let the blades shred through targets.

AOE and Grind Rotations

For AOE or field grinding with Jet Boots, cast the technique that sets the desired element, then spam Violent Gale to quickly build Zonde-Clad/Barta Blot and charge Jetsweep Jolt for periodic extra damage.

For Soaring Blades, use Destructive Stork for reliable AOE clear and incorporate the weapon action to maintain PP and sustain long waves of mobs. Always aim to trigger class-specific consumables and skill procs that amplify both AOE and single-target throughput.

Subclass Recommendations

Subclasses should complement weapon choice and desired role. Force works strongly with Jet Boots because it enables taking Clad and Blot related skills on the subclass tree, freeing main-class points for other Bouncer talents. Fighter pairs naturally with Soaring Blades for amplified down damage and melee synergies.

Orca (or Oracle in common references) and Gunner can also work for specific builds that seek PP or sustain loops. Ultimately, pick a subclass that reinforces the intended primary weapon and playstyle, keeping in mind that skill tree respecs are limited.

Tips for Performance and Survivability

Use weapon actions aggressively; they are both offensive and defensive. Time the second press of PAs when available to exploit short iframes. Match technique elements to enemy weaknesses and make use of Jetsweep Jolt, Fanatic Blade, and Photon Blade mechanics to create frequent burst windows.

If favoring Soaring Blades, rely on step dodges for survival and use quick cancels to avoid long vulnerable animations. If favoring Jet Boots, leverage guard points and counters for safer approach and retreat options.

Key Names and Mechanics to Remember

Boldly track and use Soaring Blades, Jet Boots, Photon Blade, Fanatic Blade, Destructive Stork, Rampaging Harrier, Roaring Pheasant, Spinning Gust, Fierce Wave, Violent Gale, Jetsweep Jolt, Zonde-Clad, and Barta Blot. These are the core tools that define Bouncer gameplay and rotations.

Usage Notes and Final Setup Advice

Choose Jet Boots for a more forgiving, mobile, and tech-synergized experience that scales smoothly into higher difficulty. Choose Soaring Blades if PP sustain and a distinctive weapon action playstyle are preferred, but prepare for a steeper defensive learning curve.

Invest in class skills that enhance down chance and cooldown damage, and prioritize a skill spread that supports the primary weapon while keeping a few points in universal Bouncer nodes for survivability and PP management.
