Mega Evolutions return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, bringing back a feature that changes the way you experience familiar Pokémon. Among them is Gyarados, one of the most recognizable evolutions in the series.

To add a Mega Gyarados to your team, you’ll need to first catch a Magikarp, evolve it, and then acquire the Gyaradosite needed for Mega Evolution.
Finding Magikarp Early in the Game
After completing the opening tutorials and reaching Rank Y in the Z-A Royale, you’ll gain the ability to freely explore Lumiose City. Once you’re able to move around, head toward Wild Zone 2.
There are a lot of Magikarp in this area, and they are easy to catch. From level one to level 20, train your Magikarp. When it gets to level 20, it will change into a Gyarados.
With your Gyarados ready, you can then begin the process of obtaining its Mega Evolution item.

Acquiring the Gyaradosite for Mega Evolution
To enable Mega Evolution, you’ll need to find and purchase the Gyaradosite. This item can be obtained from Quasartico Inc, which is located in the northwest area of Lumiose City.
The building is a tall tower, and the Mega Shard Exchange desk is found on the first floor. You can access this area after reaching Rank F in the main story.

Once you reach the exchange desk, select the Mega Shard exchange option and buy the Gyaradosite for 240 Mega Shards. There are stones here for other Pokémon as well, but if Gyarados is your main goal, make sure you buy the one that is made just for it.
Gathering Mega Shards
While traveling through Lumiose City, keep an eye out for Mega Shard Bundles. Collecting these regularly will help you accumulate enough shards to trade for Mega Evolution items.
The more you explore and collect, the sooner you’ll have everything required to Mega Evolve your Pokémon.
With your Gyarados and Gyaradosite ready, you’ll be able to unlock its Mega Evolution form in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Continue collecting shards as you play, as they are essential for unlocking other Mega Evolutions throughout the game.
