Scott Pilgrim EX Guide | Best Character to Start With
Pick the right fighter early and the opening hours feel much smoother
Game Guide by Ornstein on Mar 12, 2026
Picking a first character is more important than it seems. Scott Pilgrim EX has a lot of different fighters, but not all of them feel equally easy to use in the beginning. Scott Pilgrim is the safest choice if you want to learn the game quickly and avoid making big mistakes at the beginning.
He feels steady, straightforward, and easy to understand. His moves don't require much setup, which makes him the best choice for a beginner who is still learning how to space, recover, and control a crowd.

Why Scott Pilgrim Is the Best First Choice
Scott Pilgrim is fun because it doesn't make you play in a hard way. He is the all-around player of the group, so you can learn the game without having to fight your own moveset.
His attacks feel real. It's easy to tell how far he can go. It's easy to understand his pressure. That helps a lot when rooms start to fill up and enemies start to close in from both sides.
If you want to learn the game's rhythm first, this is the character to use. You can switch later. Starting with Scott Pilgrim gives you the best base to work from.
Best Choice if You Want More Range
Ramona Flowers is the next best choice if you don't want the simplest one. She plays better in the middle and adds more style to each exchange. Her kit feels more flexible, which is great once you get the hang of how rooms work.
She is still easy to use for beginners, but she is a little less forgiving than Scott Pilgrim because some of her best tools only work in certain situations.
If you want to feel more mobile and creative without going too far into a specialist role, use Ramona Flowers. She isn't the easiest first choice, but she is a great second choice.

Best Choice If You Like Speed
If speed is more important to you than comfort, Roxie Richter is the better choice. Once you get used to her timing, her sword attacks look sharp and feel quick, which makes her a lot of fun. She can still be used early on, but she usually needs a little more control than Scott Pilgrim. That makes her better for someone who already knows they want a faster, more stylish way to get there.
She has a strong personality, but she's not the easiest person to get to know. Scott Pilgrim still wins if the goal is just to have fun.

Best Choice for Raw Power
If you want a character who is heavier, Lucas Lee is the best choice. He hits hard and feels like a tank, which can be very satisfying when there are a lot of people around.
He feels less clean because he has to learn the basics. He cares more about making a difference than being comfortable. Once you know what you're doing, that can be great, but it's not always the easiest place to start.

For a first run, Lucas Lee is a better choice for a personal preference than a universal recommendation. He is strong, but Scott Pilgrim is still the best answer for beginners.
