Here's a guide on how to beat Lord Dohalim il Qaras in Tales of Arise.

Game Guide by Mash Rahman on  Jun 02, 2026

As your party journeys through the lush and seemingly tranquil realm of Elde Menancia, they come to a startling realization about the political landscape of Viscint. The Renans and the Dahnas appear to be at peace with one another, but beneath the surface lies intrigue and plotting that erupt in open conflict with the ruler himself.

Lord Dohalim il Qaras, a most polished Renan lord, stands in the palace's grand arena, battling with peerless grace and fluid precision. Lord Balseph relies on sheer brute force, while the Ooze Hive poses static tactical challenges. Dohalim, however, is a dual-threat combat style. He’s an expert at high-speed physical martial arts and high-tier dark and earth astral magic.

He has an extendable bo staff he wields with acrobatic finesse, able to go from sweeping close-range combos to massive, arena-wide spell incantations. This meeting is a big test of your agility, reaction time, and crowd control. This guide will cover the exact strategies, loadouts and defensive habits that you’ll need to match his rhythm and come out on top.

Basic Preparations and Equipment Improvements

If you go to the palace courtyard and challenge a Renan lord without carefully checking your character equipment, you’re going to get killed very quickly. Before you speak to Dohalim, make a quick detour to the local Viscint merchants and blacksmiths to fully upgrade the weapon and armor tiers of your active party. To break through Dohalim’s rapid evasions and hit him with a powerful physical burst, you absolutely must forge the strongest blade available in Alphen.

Your active four-person fighting force for this intense endurance match will be Alphen, Shionne, Rinwell and Law. Dohalim’s magical arsenal is very much based on earth and dark-elemental properties, so your accessory choices are absolutely crucial. Creating and fitting Onyx or Opal accessories for your front-line fighters will help negate his dark-energy bursts and jagged rock eruptions.

Prior to the fight, be sure to restock your inventory heavily with essential healing consumables. Use your earned currency to purchase a healthy stock of Apple Gels for flat health point recovery and a healthy stock of Orange Gels for continuous refilling of your shared Cure Points pool. Having a few Life Bottles on standby is also a crucial insurance policy if a character gets stuck in one of his fast multi-hit staff combos.

Tuning the Party AI for Equitable Support

However, as Dohalim is very fast and can switch targets mid-combo, it is important to set the AI behavior of your companions in a way that you remain in control. Take direct control of Alphen for this fight and use his heavy sword strikes to get the Lord's immediate attention. Before starting the encounter, pause the game and open up the Strategy menu to readjust your backline logic.

Shionne needs to be told in no uncertain terms that she is your primary lifesaver. Make sure she prioritizes healing and resurrection above all else, so that she auto-casts First Aid or uses recovery items the absolute instant any character's health bar drops below a safe threshold. Rinwell should be ordered to keep maximum distance along the outer perimeter, always chanting her long-distance elemental spells to inflict safe chip damage from a distance.

Law should play as an aggressive physical attacker, aiming to always apply close-range pressure with Alphen. If you put your supportive spellcasters at the far edges of the arena, they will be safe from your whole team being caught in a single sweeping radial spell. This neat division of labor lets you comfortably concentrate on handling the immediate physical threats.

Phase One Navigation and Staff Acrobatic Mechanics

Once the battle is underway, Dohalim will be incredibly mobile, dashing around the arena with fluid, high-speed movements. His main physical attacks are long staff jabs, spinning roundhouse kicks and sudden leaping attacks that let him close the distance in an instant. To survive the first few minutes of this fight you will have to resist the urge to just run up blindly and mash your standard combo strings.

Dohalim has high natural mobility and hyper armor on his basic animations, meaning your early-game sword strikes won’t easily interrupt his momentum. Instead, take a very patient defensive stance and watch his physical telegraphs closely. If you see Dohalim twirling his staff or crouching into a lunging stance, he's about to start a string of physical attacks.

You should time your dodge roll so that it causes a Perfect Evade that briefly slows down time around you. Follow this immediately with a Counter Edge to dish out guaranteed critical damage directly to his exposed flank. This disciplined cycle can be repeated to steadily wear down his posture while keeping Alphen out of harm’s way.

Casting Disruption & Rinwell's Assist

Dohalim is not only incredibly fast, but he is also very skilled at using astral energy. During the first half of the fight, the lord will often retreat to a safe distance and begin spamming powerful dark and earth spells. The glowing purple casting circles that appear directly beneath his feet as he hovers slightly make this behavior easy to identify.

If left unchecked, he will generate massive jagged rock spires directly beneath your active characters, or create localized gravity wells that pull your party members together, dealing continuous damage. This is where Rinwell's special Boost Attack becomes your most important asset. When Dohalim begins chanting a spell, activate Rinwell’s boost assist to instantly steal his magic energy.

If you successfully interrupt his chant, the incoming elemental hazard will be completely nullified, and a severe Core Break state will be triggered. The elegant lord is sent crashing helplessly to the floor, totally paralyzed for a very generous window of time. Once he is downed, tell Alphen to use his most powerful Flaming Edge skills to burn through his health pool without being contested at all.

Taking Advantage of the Stagger Windows

Whenever you manage to interrupt a spell or use a well-timed companion assist to cause a Core Break, Dohalim will completely lose his hyper-armor and stand still on the ground. Use this downtime as your last chance to go heavy on the offense and unleash your most resource-heavy combinations.

Tell Alphen to close quickly on the exposed lord and use his most powerful physical artes. To maximize damage during the boss's total helplessness, sacrifice some of your own health to enhance your fiery sword techniques. Loop your most powerful combinations until the creature begins to wake.

But you always have to have a good sense of awareness and not get greedy and chain your combos for too long. His natural hyper-armor and evasive traits will immediately re-engage at the absolute moment Dohalim begins to slowly lift himself back off the ground. If you get caught swinging wild during this recovery animation, the boss will instantly punish your greed with an unblockable point-blank radial blast that does heavy damage.

Surviving the Phase Two Over Limit Storm

Once you get Dohalim’s health pool below the halfway mark, a short cinematic will play and his fighting style will become much more aggressive. He’ll let out a resolute roar and envelop himself in a furious blue aura, indicating he’s officially in his Over Limit state. His physical stats are massively boosted and his casting times are completely removed in this hectic second half of the fight.

He begins to teleport around the arena in a mad frenzy, making high-speed tracking lunges and casting several terrestrial spells at once. Once you see it begin, you have to stop thinking about the attack and switch to a purely defensive style of play. Focus on running in wide, long circles around the outer parts of the palace arena, making good use of dodge rolls to get past his charging ways.

Keep a close eye on your shared Cure Points pool, manually using an item from your menu if Shionne needs immediate help in keeping the party stable. Don't try to attack him when he's going berserk. He has hyper armor and can trade hits immediately and knock Alphen out. Retreat your strength, wait for the blue aura to go away on its own and just keep yourself alive.

Performing the Last Blow

When the furious Over Limit attack finally ends and Dohalim pauses to regain his stamina, he will be very tired and very vulnerable to your final attack. This is your last chance to take advantage of his tiredness and win the hard-fought battle. Use any remaining party members’ Boost Gauges to chain Alphen’s blazing sword attacks and trap the lord in an unending, unbreakable stagger loop.

As your entire party continuously pumps damage into his weak body, the blue crosshair diamond that floats directly above the boss will quickly fill to full capacity. When the Strike indicator starts flashing furiously across your screen, press the corresponding directional pad prompt to execute a cinematic team-up finishing move. This spectacular coup de grace will disarm the lord for good, ending the immediate palace conflict and officially ending the duel.

Conquering Lord Dohalim is a huge achievement, showing that you can balance fast physical evasion, magical disruption, and strict defensive discipline. Once the misunderstanding is successfully cleared up, the noble Renan lord will eventually decide to join your active roster. Your party, now fortified with his all-purpose extendable staff, high-tier spells and agile healing abilities, is perfectly poised to push into the next major realm.
