In Vampire: The Masquerade – Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, combat can quickly become overwhelming if you are unprepared. Fighting isn't always the best way to handle an encounter, but learning a few basic fighting skills can help you stay alive when things get difficult during a playthrough.

Avoid Open Combat

While engaging in open combat against enemy factions is an option, it's best to limit it. How you start fights impacts the outcome. Using Stealth to pick off enemies or turn them against each other is often the most effective approach.

As you develop your build, you'll unlock combat abilities suitable for small groups. Facing stronger enemies with larger health pools makes large fights risky, especially since healing is difficult under attack.

Crouching Stealth Attacks

When keeping a low profile, Stealth kills are the most effective way to eliminate enemies in Seattle's streets and underground without drawing attention. Staying hidden usually means crouching to select targets, but crouching above enemies might prevent Stealth assassinations.

For instance, if you're on a platform above a target, you might need to stand up before the Stealth kill option appears. Many think enemies are immune to Stealth, but it's often due to camera angles and crouch positioning. Getting close to a platform edge helps, but it also risks falling onto the enemy.

A better approach is to crouch, wait for the target to come within range, then quickly stand, perform the Stealth kill, and crouch again for cover.

Slow Down Time

Some abilities in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 let you slow time in combat, but you can access a basic version from the start. Holding the left trigger opens the ability menu and slows time briefly, helping you plan your next move.

This is useful in chaotic fights for avoiding attacks or escaping when overwhelmed. When more than one enemy attacks, hold down the trigger to look around and use Vampiric Sprint to get away. This slow-motion helps you control combat encounters without using ability points, but it's not as strong as abilities that you can unlock later.

Importance of Dodge

In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2's early stages, you might overlook the dodge function, relying on vampiric powers to manage damage. However, dodging is crucial in combat, allowing you to perform a kick that pushes enemies back or knocks them off ledges.

Backward dodging is especially effective against high-damage red attacks when followed by a counterkick. Enemies often delay their powerful strikes, so timing dodges carefully is key.

The dodge also acts as a parry against light melee attacks; dodging into an enemy during an attack, such as a Punch or Swing, interrupts and stuns them briefly, creating a counterattack opportunity. With a wide parry window, dodging is highly useful against groups of close-range opponents.

Mix and Match Ability Trees

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 offers a flexible system for building Vampire powers. You can unlock abilities from different clans by visiting Vampires around Seattle. To do so, collect specific blood types from Inhabitants, then visit the Clan to spend Blood Points and add abilities to your tree.

Unlock them with ability points. Initially, focus on upgrading your starting class skills, as you can only equip one per row, and branching out early limits options. Saving points for useful skills from other classes can help you customize your build later.

Abilities on Multiple Enemies

Many of the abilities you unlock are limited to targeting a single enemy, but several can affect multiple foes if positioned correctly.

For instance, the Bladed Hand Strike, which is typically used to decapitate a single target, can eliminate multiple enemies at once if they are grouped closely together.

This method can also apply to other abilities, allowing you to maximize damage output and Stealth efficiency by attacking clustered opponents simultaneously.

Use Dead Bodies

When you defeat enemies in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, their bodies stay in the environment, offering tactical options. You can use dead bodies as tools, like throwing them at charging enemies to interrupt and stagger their movement.

You can pick up a dead enemy and use it as a Shield to block shots as you close in. When you get close, throw the body to stun it and use your Vampire skills. Finding the bodies of dead NPCs helps you hide and defeat armed enemies.

Test Out Ability Combinations

In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, some of the best strategies can be found by trying out different mixtures of abilities. As you gain more abilities, you'll find that some of them work better with others, making deadly combos when used together.

When you use Cauldron of Blood on a target, it draws enemies to it. Following up with Blood Curse causes an explosion that can kill multiple enemies. Knowing how abilities work together helps you run groups more smoothly and keep fighting under control.
