GeForce RTX 2070 in 2026: Is It Still Worth Buying for 1080p Gaming?

NVIDIA's RTX 2070 continues to demonstrate respectable 1080p gaming performance despite its age and increasingly demanding modern titles.

Graphics cards, RAM, and storage have become increasingly expensive, making budget gaming PC builds harder to put together. As a result, the second-hand market offers gamers an affordable way to run recent games. The GeForce RTX 2070, debuted in 2018, remains an interesting alternative because of its 8GB of VRAM, DLSS support, and ray-tracing capabilities.

RTX 2070 Specifications and Test Setup

The RTX 2070 includes 8GB GDDR6 VRAM, a 256-bit memory bus, and a PCIe 3.0 connection. It draws 175W of power and requires an 8-pin power connector. The model tested has a blower-type cooler; however, more traditional cooling systems are available.

The test system has an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor (6 cores, 12 threads, 3.6GHz) and 16GB of DDR4 RAM running at 3200MHz. Storage differences: SSD vs. mechanical hard drives. The system runs Windows 11 Ghost Specter 1.0 (based on version 24H2). GPU and CPU usage will be tracked during gameplay.

Modern Games at 1080p

Sally Face: Townfall is played at 1920x1080 with High graphics settings and DLSS Balanced mode. Performance is around 80fps, though it drops as CPU usage grows. Poor optimization and heavy CPU reliance undermine consistency.

Pragmata does better, averaging about 80 fps and hitting 90 fps with High settings and DLSS in Quality mode. The GPU runs at 95% while the CPU runs at about 20–30%. Resident Evil also performs decently at 1080p with High settings and DLSS; however, results can differ in later regions.

Cyberpunk 2077 displays the RTX 2070 without upscaling. We tried native 1920x1080 with High settings, and the game ran at around 80 fps in the section we tested. This suggests DLSS isn't strictly necessary to get workable performance.

Gears of War E-Day Requires Careful Settings

Gears of War: E-Day uses DLSS in Performance mode, a mixture of High and Medium settings, and Low ray tracing. With an unlimited frame rate, performance fluctuates noticeably. The game also warns that it requires an SSD, but the test uses a mechanical hard drive.

Capping the frame rate at 60 fps and increasing almost all settings to High produces a much more stable benchmark result. This demonstrates how sensible settings adjustments can improve consistency in demanding modern games.

Story-Driven Games Remain Playable

The Last of Us Part II achieved around 60-65 fps at 1080p with High settings and DLSS on Dynamic. Expedition 33 runs at roughly 55-60 fps with High settings and DLSS set to Quality. Death Stranding 2 also runs respectably at 1080p and High settings.

These numbers are from early stages of the game; thus, more difficult encounters may have different frame rates. Sticking to a story-oriented game at 60 fps can help to provide a more consistent experience.

Fortnite & Counter-Strike 2 Performance

In Fortnite, we are seeing around 140-150 fps at 1080p with DirectX 12, DLSS, and High settings. Counter-Strike 2 runs at about 180-200 fps with all graphical settings set to High.

Competitive players often run lower settings for higher frame rates, but these results show the RTX 2070 can still deliver responsive gameplay without sacrificing visual quality.

Is it worth buying an RTX 2070 in 2026?

The RTX 2070 still handles many recent games at 1080p, averaging about 80fps in some demanding titles and over 100fps in competitive games. But performance depends on graphics settings, optimization, storage, and CPU load.

Ultimately, it depends on the card's physical condition and its second-hand price. The RTX 2070 can be a viable cheap gaming choice with 8GB of VRAM, DLSS support, and ray tracing. In demanding games, you'll need to compromise to keep performance consistent. Buyers should compare its price with newer options before buying.
