A major update has arrived that significantly improves the Xbox full-screen experience, especially on devices like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X. This update addresses one of the most frustrating usability issues by streamlining how updates and applications are accessed, making the overall experience far more seamless and efficient.

Joining the Xbox Insider Program

First, access to this feature requires joining the Xbox Insider Hub. That is nothing complicated. Anyone can join by simply downloading the app and opting into preview builds.

Once enrolled, the latest test versions of Xbox software and Windows gaming features become available immediately.

The Biggest Issue with Updates Finally Addressed

The number one issue with the Xbox Ally and the Xbox Ally X was the fragmented update process. Previously, updating everything required exiting the full-screen Xbox experience and navigating back to the Windows desktop.

From there, updates had to be handled separately through My ASUS, the Microsoft Store, and sometimes even other locations. Occasionally, updates would appear within the interface, but it felt inconsistent and unreliable.

Now, that frustration is largely gone. A new crosshair-style button has been introduced, allowing direct access to adding apps and games within the full-screen environment. This change makes a massive difference in day-to-day usability.

Add Apps Directly Into the Full-Screen Experience

With the new “Add Apps” feature, a list of installed applications is automatically detected and presented. Instead of manually browsing for .exe files, everything appears in a clean, accessible interface. If something is missing, such as an emulator or a less common tool, a browse option allows manual selection.

This is where things get exciting. Essential apps like AMD Software, My ASUS, and Microsoft Store can now be added directly into the Xbox full-screen mode. Once added, they appear in the app library and can be launched instantly without ever leaving the interface.

Seamless Updates Without Leaving Xbox Mode

We can now open My ASUS directly within the full-screen experience and check for updates, including BIOS updates that previously did not appear in Armoury Crate. This eliminates the need to switch back to the desktop entirely.

The same applies to the Microsoft Store. Updates can be accessed through downloads and installed immediately. Likewise, AMD Software is now just a click away, making it easy to tweak performance settings even while running a game.

This dramatically improves quality of life. Instead of jumping between interfaces and restarting workflows, everything is now centralized where it should have been from the beginning.

Game and App Library Customization Improvements

The update also extends to adding games. The system finds installed titles and lets you browse them manually if you need to, just like apps do. It's easy to manage entries. You can remove items or change their names and icons when you enter them by hand.

There are still some problems, though. For instance, you can't change the names or artwork of games that you pull directly from platforms like Steam currently. You can update entries that you create yourself, but native integrations still don't have this level of freedom.

Still, the ability to put apps and games in their own libraries is a nice addition that keeps things from getting too cluttered and makes it easier to find what you're looking for.

Expanding the Experience to Other Devices

These improvements are not limited to the Xbox Ally lineup. Devices like the Legion Go 2 also benefit from the same Insider updates. We can now add AMD Software and Microsoft Store directly to the interface, freeing up hardware buttons that were previously mapped for quick access.

This creates more flexibility in control customization while maintaining quick access to essential tools through the software interface itself.

A Major Step in the Right Direction

This upgrade is a big step forward. It doesn't yet combine all update sources into one place, but it makes things a lot easier to use and less frustrating for everyone. Being able to use important apps, make updates, and manage tools without leaving the full-screen Xbox experience is a huge deal.

Use the feature right now if you're interested in joining the Insider program. For everyone else, it should be available soon in the stable release. The change represents a huge leap toward a more interconnected and user-friendly gaming ecosystem, regardless of the outcome.
