There are rumors going around about Sucker Punch Productions' newest epic, Ghost of Yōtei. All of them center on one question: Will this world grow through a future DLC? According to some new reports, the studio isn't completely against the idea.

When asked about content after the game came out, Sucker Punch said it was "open to exploring opportunities." This is a cautious but hopeful statement that leaves the door open. Among these subtle comments, one stood out: the mention of a plot that hadn't been explored yet, which made people wonder what might happen next.

If Ghost of Yōtei continues the story of Ghost of Tsushima, fans might expect something like the Iki Island expansion: a story that stands on its own and makes the world more emotional. Now is a good time for the company to write one last chapter for Atsu, ending her story with a final test of her strength and purpose. Still, for many people, her story is already over.

The closing provided balance and a chance to think, pointing toward peace rather than continuation. Still, Sucker Punch gave the impression that Atsu's journey might not be over yet. The way the studio put it made it sound like they weren't just hoping for survival, but also for a life and maybe a story that was still worth sharing.

One of the ideas that is going around stands out: looking into Atsu's father's past. In Ghost of Yōtei, pieces of his heritage can be heard in her conversations and in other people's memories.

These pieces shape her personality long before the player draws their first sword. This mysterious person is still one of the game's most interesting mysteries. He is a man of great skill who left his family, leaving behind scars and stories. He could be the focus of a backstory DLC that would help make sense of the family's complicated past and add a new angle to Yōtei's story.

But making such a move would be dangerous. To make a usable experience for a character that isn't meant to fight in the main game, you would have to rethink how the game progresses, how it works, and how it sounds.

From the point of view of Lord Saitō, the cruel person who planned the Yōtei Six, there is another strong chance. He stands out as a character because he is both charming and scary, driven by belief but tainted by ambition. Fans might have a different view of the game's main conflict if there was a story that followed his rise, a villain's journey told through his eyes.

It would be possible to go into terrifying depth about his ideas, methods, and betrayals. It's a bold idea for a story. It's technically possible. His fighting style, which has been honed over many fights, gives Sucker Punch a strong base to build on. Still, a DLC that was built around an enemy would need to be very accurate. In order to be humanizing without justifying, it would have to be challenging without saving.

Then there's the quiet chance of going back to Atsu herself. A story set after Yōtei that includes her and Kiku could be a meaningful ending, similar to how Tsushima's stories are put together, but with a smaller, more personal story. The relationship between a master and an apprentice is already emotional, and the thought of seeing how it changes after the war is very appealing.

But this method would need to be limited. In the original ending, both characters were on the edge of sadness and renewal. Going back to them could break the peace she worked so hard to build, unless a new threat appears on its own, causing Atsu to face the ghosts of her past while protecting the fragile peace she achieved.

The last road goes backwards instead of forwards. It leads to a prequel that tells the story of Atsu's war years before Ghost of Yōtei. The game makes a brief reference to this unseen battle, implying a time of change, loss, and discovery that made her the warrior she is today.

This long-forgotten war could show how Atsu learned her skill and formed her beliefs. But this would mean taking away many of her powers, which would make the game less fun and return combat to its basic forms. The experience would be less open-ended, and new methods, allies, and environments would be needed to make up for it.

Every way holds both hope and danger. There are more stories to be told in Ghost of Yōtei, whether they are about a father's haunted heritage, a warlord's ruined honor, or a warrior's strength as he learns to live again. What we still don't know is if Sucker Punch will choose to light them up. It seems like the studio is purposely quiet, like something is going on in the background. The world in Yōtei has stopped for now, but the faint sound of steel being sharpened makes you think that the peace might not last forever.
