Is the Prince of Persia Remake in Jeopardy?
Fans anticipating the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake have received another update from the developers, and it’s not looking good.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released in 2003 and, in September 2020, Ubisoft announced a remake of the action-adventure title at their Ubisoft Forward event. Since the initial announcement, however, information on the progress of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been intermittent… until now.
On May 3rd the game’s official Twitter account announced that development would be moving from Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal. No specific reason has been given as to why the French company has made this decision, but the team behind Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake have promised that Ubisoft Montreal will be “building upon work by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai”. Video game delays are a common occurrence in the industry, now more than ever, but what is concerning is the long bouts of silence between updates. For example, the last Twitter post was on October 28th, 2021, and before that June 7th, 2021. Both times reassuring fans that development was still underway.
While the game has not been in development for as long as some titles (looking at you Final Fantasy VII Remake), there is a good chance that Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai bit off more than they could chew with the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. Ubisoft Pune have worked on Prince of Persia mobile games in the past and have recently been involved with ports of the Just Dance series, and Ubisoft Mumbai (which was established in 2018) has yet to release a game. Ubisoft Montreal on the other hand is a bigger and more experienced studio, having released dozens of flagship series including Assassin’s Creed, Watchdogs, and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.
Bundled with a copy of the original 1989 Prince of Persia game, pre-orders for The Sands of Time Remake have been open since September 2020. Bizarrely, the official website for the game still has the original release date of 18th March 2021, even though the same page now lists Ubisoft Montreal as the developer.
Only time will tell if Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake eventually finds its way to store shelves, or if it will go down in videogame history as yet another title stuck in development hell.
