Several significant game mechanics adjustments were made to reflect the era. Such as an increased emphasis on the post and mid-range game and a revamped transition game that evoked the 1980s era and featured narrower transition lanes and more players cutting to the basket with a numerical advantage than in today's NBA. New jump shots, layups, dunk packages, and more emphasis on the toughness on the court and in the paint for legends like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Most importantly, rules authentically reflect the 1990s basketball era, such as the Detroit Pistons 'Bad Boys' with their famed 'Jordan Rules' and more, allow for hand-checking and hard-hitting body-ups, giving a new flavor to the one-on-one confrontations.

NBA 2K23, developed by Visual Concepts, is expected to launch on September 9, 2022, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
