According to a recent Halo Waypoint blog post, Halo Wars 2 will not receive any more updates. There are also no plans for a third game, any time soon at least.

343 Industries community manager John Junyszek broke the news, and had this to say in his post:

"It's not always easy to be open and transparent--particularly when we expect it's not an answer the community wants to hear--but we want to give it to you straight: 343 Industries has no current plans for further Halo Wars 2 work including content updates, balance patches, bringing the title to other platforms, or a new game in the series,"

He didn't say that there'd never be another game, though, so fans have that to hold on to at least:

"we're specifically never going to say never because, well, who knows what the future may bring."

Junyszek cited time management and resources as the reason the company is stepping away from the series; they aim to focus fully on supporting The Master Chief Collection and the release of their next big title, Halo Infinite

"Given the broader impact initiatives the studio is already committed to, we unfortunately can't devote the time and attention we’d need to deliver additional updates and content for the Halo Wars franchise."

He closed his address by thanking fans for their continued support, and praised the Halo Wars franchise for what it brought to the Halo universe:

"Halo Wars 2 will continue to be a special game with a very special community and for that, we’re grateful."

Halo Wars 2 is available for PC and Xbox One, with backward compatibility for Xbox Series X & S.
