Different types of gaming

Before we find out which skills can be used in other areas of life, it’s important to differentiate between the different forms of gaming we’re referring to here. First off, there’s the obvious choice: classic console gaming. Whether it’s sport or first-person shooter games you’re into, this is a major sector.

Life skills learned from gaming

So, we’ve considered a couple of ways in which gamers can game.

- Dexterity: handling a games console controller like that of the Xbox can actually be a lot of work. The more you do it, the more dexterous you will become.

- Math: a lot of math goes into playing games such as roulette and poker, so if you do this a lot, you’ll probably find that your brain becomes better at handling numbers, which is never a bad thing.

- Reaction times: this one is more specific to the likes of FPS games but there are others that test your reaction times, of course. This can be a really handy skill to have in life!

- Social skills: a great thing about gaming is that it allows you to talk to other people a lot of the time.

Of course, there are a few more to add to this list. But think about those mentioned here. Do you feel that you have gotten better at any of them since you started gaming? You’re not the first. The next thing to do is find out how that can benefit you in your life.

What can these skills do for me?

Depending on which of the skills you have developed from our list above, you might be able to enjoy some of the following benefits. Let’s check out a few scenarios:

- Joining the military: This might not be for everyone. But military officials will definitely look at you more favorably if you’re able to demonstrate that you have good dexterity and reaction times, that’s for sure.

- Generally being more employable: If you can confidently say that you have developed any of the skills above, why not add them to your CV? This has the potential to give you a one-up as you look for your next job.

- Safer: You never know when you might need to jump into action in life and save yourself or somebody else from injury. Gaming really can give you the extra edge to do stuff like that!

This list really could go on and on, and it’s always a good idea to think about how gaming could benefit you. The bottom line is to never discredit gaming as being a waste of time.

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be leveling up with skills that are useful outside of gaming, you’re having fun. Just make sure that you balance gaming out with other things in life! You don’t want to be spending all your time doing it.
