If there's one thing I enjoy from fringe massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, it's their ability to come up with the wildest ideas to grab the attention. Developer Wargaming has yet again knocked it out of the park, by introducing their latest patch for World of Tanks in collaboration with none other than WWE. That's right, the vehicular combat title will partner with the most popular wrestling organization for a game about tanks going around shooting stuff; what a natural fit.
Update 5.0 introduces SummerSlam Season 1, which alludes to more events with WWE down the line. Available today and lasting until the start of autumn, September 21, players will be able to unlock legendary figures, such as "Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Undertaker and new superstar Becky Lynch. Classic wrestler Sgt. Slaughter will also be part of the event. Some of these personas will be available for free, while others need to be unlocked. Other names included in this update are Roman Reigns, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels.
Aside from wrestlers, the patch also comes with a WWE Garage where players can unlock special intros, but for their tanks.
It should be noted that Update 5.0 is for the console version of World of Tanks. Additionally, the patch also stealthily releases a pretty important new feature. From now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users will be able to join forces, as the game implements cross-play.
This is not the first time that developer Wargaming has used its success to reach into peculiar promotional branches. Previously, World of Tanks welcomed Italian football national Gianluigi Buffon in their game. In World of Warships, another one of their franchise, hockey player Alexander Ovechkin was added as a character. This is exactly how brands should synergize, honestly. Keep cross promotion weird!
