Coming to PC sometime this year is a new asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, The Flock, that's going to entirely depend on the players to determine just how long this game stays available to the masses. Developed by the Dutch indie studio Vogelsap (“Bird Juice”), much of the game has been revealed in press releases, but according to them the game will be entirely affected by the players themselves and how long they survive in this place. With each death in the game, one life will be taken from The Flock's population, when the game reaches zero the game will never be purchasable again, which means that the players could wipe before the games grand finale. Once the game's storyline ends, the game will be removed from all players' libraries and will never be playable again.

The Flock light artifact

The press release discusses how each player starts out as a member of The Flock, and they must travel to the light artifact that appears on map. If they reach it first, they become the Carrier and they are hunted by their former Flock mates. The Carrier can destroy The Flock members with a laser light from the artifact, but if The Flock seizes the light artifact the Carrier dies and whoever killed the Carrier becomes the new Carrier. When the Carrier dies they become a member of the Flock again, that has to avoid being killed by the cursed light.

When it comes to the story, according to the press release:

“The Flock are a tragic race as they are doomed to extinction. The titular abominations are irrevocably attracted to the light of the Artifact which will lead to their death or transformation into a whole other being. Trying to convey this story into the game as well as the team's aspiration to find a solution to the anticlimactic ending of multiplayer games, resulted in the idea of the Flock's population countdown [..]

“Set in the year 3000, an unrecognizable Earth is in ruins. Centuries of devastating pollution have blocked out the sun, blanketing the planet in darkness. No longer able to support human life, a horrifying race of monstrous creatures known as the Flock is the world's new dominant species. That is, until the emergence of the Carrier.”
