HBO has confirmed that they are to fully produce a TV series based on The Last of Us. The project went into planning phases in March but was likely delayed to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show will be an adaptation of the games and still focus on the main two characters, Joel and Ellie. No actors are currently attached to play either leading role. The project is currently being led by a partnership between Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the showrunner of Chernobyl. HBO and Sony PlayStation Productions will also closely oversee the show’s development.

It is unknown just how far the plotline or other characters will diverge for the game’s narrative. Mazin has gone on to hint that The Last of Us HBO series will lift some ideas that were cut from the game. The show may expand on other characters and threads, as not every episode need focus on just Joel and Ellie. Still, many video game adaptations have taken wild liberties when brought to a different media.
