Xbox Series X and Series S Could Get More FPS Boost Games

Xbox FPS Boost may return with new enhancements for backward-compatible games across Series X, Series S, and Project Helix consoles.

Xbox FPS Boost hasn't received new additions in some time, but recent comments from Jason Ronald suggest Microsoft may be working on more enhancements for backward-compatible games. The program previously improved frame rates for Xbox games on Xbox Series X and Series S, although technical and licensing limitations prevented some titles from receiving updates.

More PS Boost games may come to Xbox Series X and Series S in the future. FPS Boost launched on consoles quite a while ago, but at some point Microsoft stopped adding games because some titles had technical limitations and others had licensing issues. Not every publisher wanted to agree to boost their games.

Xbox FPS Boost Could Be Returning

Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one example where a 60fps update hasn't arrived on Xbox Series S and Series X or PlayStation 5. Hundreds of FPS Boost games are already on Xbox Series S and Series X, but others could still benefit from the technology. The possibility of more games returning to the program also matters for Project Helix.

Whatever enhancements Xbox 360 or Xbox One games receive for Xbox Series S and Series X could also carry over to Project Helix. The FPS Boost program has effectively stopped for around 2–3 years because of technical and licensing limitations. However, the situation may have changed after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard.

XBOX now owns many games through Activision. If licensing issues prevented some of those games from receiving FPS Boost enhancements in the past, Microsoft and Xbox may have resolved them now that they own the games. Not every Activision game is fully owned by Xbox, though. Activision previously worked on licensed games, including Spider-Man and Transformers titles.

The latest indication comes from Jason Ronald, who leads the team working on FPS Boost technology. Chris Gaming on Twitter asked Jason Ronald about reports that the FPS Boost program would return and whether those reports were true. If there were no games or enhancements in the works, a more direct response would be reasonable.

That raises the possibility of returning to some OG Xbox games that still run at 30 fps.

Instead, saying there is nothing to announce while the team works on several things suggests new enhancements could be coming to the FPS Boost program. That doesn't confirm the program's return, but it gives Xbox users something to watch for later this year. When OG Xbox games were introduced on PC, people also discussed more games coming in the future, along with enhancements.

Many games fall into that category, and Microsoft could potentially enhance them on both Xbox and PC. It is also interesting that some OG Xbox games had higher frame rates than Xbox 360 games. Many older games had unlocked frame rates. Morrowind, for example, was not really a 60 fps game on OG Xbox. That was the goal, but it generally ran anywhere between 30 fps and 50 fps.

However, when emulated and running on Xbox Series S and Series X, Morrowind can run at a much more stable 60 fps. The 25th anniversary event planned for November could bring several announcements. Many games are still locked to 30 fps on the original Xbox and Xbox 360 and continue to run at around 1080p at 30 fps through backward compatibility.
