You recruit land military through the Barracks, which becomes available once your population grows enough to support a workforce and a standing force. The first units you can obtain are Auxilia and Archers, which serve as the initial land troops.

More troop types become available through Research and by increasing Belief and Devotion. Recruiting units lower your available workforce, so you must continue building and upgrading residences to maintain a stable supply of workers as your military grows.

Unlocking Advanced Units

As you move forward in the game, you get access to mount units. For example, the Equestrian Cavalry becomes available after you finish the Epona's Hoofbeat Civic Research. In Anno 117: Pax Romana, adding more people to your roster lets you use more strategies for both attack and defense.

Controlling Land Troops

You can command units one at a time or select all of them by clicking and dragging across your formation. Land troops share the same stance system as naval units. Aggressive causes troops to break from commands and engage nearby enemies.

Disciplined keeps them on assigned orders. Evasive makes them withdraw when attacked. You can also activate Auto Battle to observe the outcome of a fight without issuing direct commands in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
