You can obtain Sephiroth as a Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance during Chapter 5, but you must defeat him first. His boss battle is difficult if you want to avoid overleveling. Terra's Ultima, Dark protection, and careful opening actions make an early attempt possible.
Find Sephiroth at Whirlpool Hollow
Once you unlock the airship in Chapter 5, travel to Whirlpool Hollow, the whirlpool at sea near the Kingdom of Grandshelt, northeast of the Village of Kol. Fly over the whirlpool and choose to proceed. Inside, interact with the Vision Crystal to accept Sephiroth's challenge. You can leave if you're not ready.

Sephiroth is level 45 and has 250,000 HP. He can overwhelm a party at that level. Save before accepting the challenge and organize the abilities you intend to use.
Max Terra's Awakening and Prepare Your Visions
Terra is the key to the early strategy. Unlock her final Awakening tier so she can use Ultima, a powerful non-elemental magic attack. Don't rely on ordinary attacks instead. Keep enough MP for repeated casts.
Master as many Visions as reasonably possible before attempting Sephiroth. Raising their Mastery Ranks earns additional Ability Points (AP) and useful passives. Focus on farming Mastery Rank Points (MRP) instead of character experience if you want to stay underleveled. You don't need every Vision.
Set Up Cecil and the Critical-Hit Option
Equip Cecil's Vision on your tank. Sephiroth uses significant Dark damage, and Cecil can provide Dark Immunity once that Mastery ability has been learned and equipped. This helps your party survive the setup. Don't assume the immunity is active simply because you own Cecil's Vision.
Genji Gloves are helpful but not required. If you don't have them, combine Squall's Gut Rip with Amelia's Aim. Gut Rip makes attacks either miss or land as critical hits, while Aim ensures attacks connect. Apply support effects before attacking.

Handle Sephiroth's Changing Phases
Start by establishing protection and any damage-enhancing effects. Keep the tank standing, then use Ultima as your main offensive tool. Sephiroth has very high magic defense, so strong Mastery bonuses and careful timing matter. Keep healing when needed.
The fight changes as Sephiroth moves through his phases. He initially has no elemental weakness. In his middle phase, he can shift between elemental forms, each with a different weakness. Check his current form before choosing attacks. If Masamune in Waiting is active, avoid physical attacks because he can parry and counter them.

In the final phase, Sephiroth becomes weak to Light but absorbs Dark, so Dark attacks will restore his HP. Use suitable Light attacks or your non-elemental options, keep your party healthy, and push for the last stagger before the fight's countdown becomes a problem.
Claim the Sephiroth Vision
Once you defeat Sephiroth, you receive his Vision, Fallen Hero Sephiroth, which you can use in your party's Vision setup. You don't need to wait for later chapters.
To unlock Sephiroth early, reach Whirlpool Hollow by airship, prepare Terra's Ultima and Cecil's Dark protection, then defeat Sephiroth through all three phases.
