How AMD Zen 6 Can Make PC Builds Cheaper?

AMD Zen 6 leaks point to higher CPU performance and memory efficiency that could reduce RAM spending for PC builders.

AMD's next-generation CPUs could bring a major change to desktop performance, but the upgrade may involve more than CPU speeds alone. Zen 6 is already appearing in early leaks, and the reported performance numbers suggest a significant improvement over current-generation processors. Alongside the CPU gains, AMD's work on memory could also affect how much money needs to be spent on RAM.

Over the last few years, AMD has changed the CPU market. Before Ryzen, Intel dominated desktop processors, but when AMD introduced its Zen architecture, everything started to change. Each generation continued improving. Zen 2 improved efficiency, Zen 3 brought performance gains, and Zen 4 introduced DDR5 support.

Zen 6 Performance Starts Showing Up in Leaks

Now AMD is preparing its next major generation, Zen 6. Even though Zen 6 has not officially launched, early engineering samples have already appeared online. One of these chips is reportedly called Medusa Point. According to leaks, this processor could feature 10 cores, 20 threads, and the Zen 6 architecture.

In an early Geekbench 6 leak, the Zen 6 sample reportedly scored 3,174 points in single-core performance and 15,092 points in multi-core performance. A newer leak showed even higher results. The same chip reportedly reached 3,329 points in single-core performance and 16,555 points in multi-core performance.

These are not official benchmarks. They come from engineering samples, meaning the final product could perform differently. But if these numbers are accurate, Zen 6 could represent a major jump over AMD's current generation. Compared to AMD's current Zen 5 mobile processors, the difference is especially interesting.

Against the Ryzen AI 9 365, the leaked Zen 6 sample reportedly scored about 35% higher in single-core performance. A jump like that would be notable because new CPU generations normally bring smaller improvements, with better efficiency, higher clock speeds, and architectural changes.

Why the CPU Has a Connection to RAM

The CPU and memory do not work separately. Inside every modern processor is something called a memory controller, and its job is to communicate with the DRAM in the system. The faster and more efficiently this process happens, the less time the CPU has to spend waiting for data. That is why the memory controller can impact performance.

AMD appears to be making changes to how Zen 6 handles memory. On its upcoming EPYC Venice processors, AMD is moving up to 16 memory channels while also supporting faster memory than previous generations. These are server processors, so we cannot assume Ryzen will get the exact same upgrades.

However, it does show that AMD is improving the memory capabilities of Zen 6. The interesting part is what these memory improvements could mean for PC builders. If Zen 6 becomes more efficient at handling memory, you may not need as much expensive DDR5 to get the most out of your CPU.

That does not mean Zen 6 will fix RAM prices.

It will not stop shortages, and expensive RAM is not suddenly going to become useless. Instead, the benefit could come from needing less of that expensive RAM in the first place. If Zen 6 can get more performance out of affordable memory kits, you may not need to spend extra money on the fastest RAM just to get the most out of the processor. When RAM prices are high, that can make a difference.

Instead of spending that extra money on memory, you could put it toward a better graphics card, more storage, or simply use it to stay within your budget. We do not know exactly how much of a difference these memory improvements will make. The Ryzen versions could also differ from AMD's server processors, and the leaked benchmarks are based on engineering samples rather than final retail hardware.

Still, if these early results are accurate, Zen 6 could be more than just a faster generation of Ryzen processors. At a time when RAM prices are making PC building more difficult, improved memory handling could become another reason for PC builders to pay attention to AMD's next-generation CPUs.
