Sega Sammy and Paramount Pictures have announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently in development.
Variety has confirmed that the sequel will see the return of director Jeff Flower, along with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. There has been no confirmation if Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, or Jim Carrey will reprise their roles as Sonic, Thomas, Maddie, and Dr. Robotnik, respectively. There are also no details about the sequel’s plot or if characters like Knuckles, Tails, or Amy will appear.
The original character design of Sonic was widely panned by fans when he was first revealed in May 2019. The film was delayed nearly four months to redesign the main character in order to resemble his in-game image. This included changing his body proportions, adding the iconic white gloves, and giving him new shoes.
The redesign and new animation increased the budget by nearly $5 million. Moving Pictures Company, one of the visual effects studios involved, permanently closed their Vancouver studio shortly after completing work on the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog grossed over $306.8 million against its $95 million budget. This is in spite being delayed in several countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
