Your party in Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen has you, your main pawn, and two temporary pawns from the Rift. The setup below fits the start of the expansion, and it covers roles, vocations, and upkeep.

Main Pawn
Make your main pawn a Mage. You control the skills of the main pawn, so you can fill the slots with buffs: elemental buffs, a stamina buff, a cleanse for debuffs, and an attack speed buff. You change the elemental buffs to match the weakness of the enemy you fight.
Temporary Pawns
Pick a Sorcerer and an Archer for the other two slots. The Sorcerer gives you control, area damage, and damage output. The Archer deals damage from range and does not get stuck trying to reach a target the way a melee pawn can.

If you prefer a melee pawn, take a Warrior with the taunt skill in place of the Archer. The Warrior pulls enemy attention onto itself, and you gain room to deal damage.
Skill Slots
You and your main pawn have six weapon skill slots. Fill all six on both of you. On a PlayStation controller, hold L1 and press Square and X, or Triangle and Circle, to use the extra slots.
Upkeep
You level up fast in the expansion, and the temporary pawns fall behind. Swap them for pawns closer to your level on a regular basis. Equip your main pawn with relic gear that matches your own and with improved skills from that gear.
