Over the previous six years, the names, prices, and performance of products in this category have changed many times. The product doesn't fit prior Radeon naming conventions. However, it is close to the $500 US price range that has been the norm for several mid- to high-tier Radeon releases.

To see how it stacks up against older models, RX 9070 XT is tested against RX 5700 XT, RX 6700 XT, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7900 GRE at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K with medium and high/ultra presets.

Where RX 9070 fits in and when it will be released

We looked at RX 9070 before and thought it wasn't very useful compared to RX 9070 XT because it was only $50 cheaper and performed roughly 12% worse. The XT model had a better cost per frame when it first came out.

However, availability changed quickly, and the XT often cost more than the MSRP in many areas. At the same time, RX 9070 XT often stayed close to its intended price. This comparison focused on the RX 9070 XT because of its price and proximity to the $500 US range.

RX 9070 XT is currently selling for its $600 MSRP, whereas RX 9070 can go as low as $510 but is usually about $550. Prices are likely to go up.

How well does Call of Duty Black Ops 6 work

With the default preset, RX 9070 achieved 316 fps at 1080p, 243 at 1440p, and 139 at 4K. At 1440p, it was 25% quicker than RX 7900 GRE, 29% faster than RX 7800 XT, 48% faster than RX 7700 XT, 87% faster than RX 6700 XT, and 167% faster than RX 5700 XT.

The margins stayed about the same with the Extreme preset, and the gain over RX 6700 XT increased to 108%.

At 1080p, RX 9070 XT was almost 40% faster than RX 7900 GRE, and at 1440p, it was 27% faster. At 1440p, performance was 97% better than the RX 6700 XT and 187% better than RX 5700 XT. RX 9070 XT stayed 25% ahead of the GRE at 1080p and 1440p and 33% ahead at 4K when settings were high. At 1440p, gains over RX 6700 XT were 107%.

A Comparison of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

At 1080p, RX 9070 XT was 28% faster than RX 7900 GRE with medium settings. At 1440p, it was 37% faster. At 1440p, it was 103% quicker than RX 6700 XT and 156% faster than RX 5700 XT. At the extremely high setting, the margins stayed the same, and depending on the resolution, the benefits can reach 200% over RX 5700 XT.

Analysis of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

At 1080p, RX 9070 XT was 18% faster than RX 7900 GRE, at 1440p, it was 20% faster, and at 4K, it was 26% faster. RX 6700 XT gained between 83% and 102%. The boost was 155% to 159% higher than RX 5700 XT. Ultra settings showed similar scaling, with more than a 150% improvement over the RX 5700 XT.

Scaling of Rainbow Six Siege Performance

At 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, RX 9070 XT was 43%, 41%, and 39% faster than the RX 7900 GRE, respectively, when using the medium preset. Performance more than doubled that of RX 6700 XT, up 138% at 4K. When Ultra Plus was enabled, the difference between RX 9070 XT and GRE decreased, but RX 6700 XT still showed an increase of more than 100%.

Results for Space Marine 2

At lesser resolutions, Space Marine 2 uses a lot of CPU power. At 1080p medium, RX 9070 XT achieved 147 fps, 12% faster than the RX 7900 GRE. Resolutions that the GPU constrained exhibited better scaling, with a 30% lead at 4K. RX 6700 XT was better by 62% to 103%. The RX 5700 XT struggled; therefore, the upgrade was significant in all circumstances.

Ultra preset data showed comparable proportional differences, with the RX 9070 XT exhibiting up to a 110% increase over RX 6700 XT at 4K.

How well does Shadow of the Tomb Raider run?

RX 9070 XT got 278 fps at 1080p, 214 fps at 1440p, and 129 fps at 4K when set to medium. At 1440p, it was 26% faster than RX 7900 GRE, 80% faster than RX 6700 XT, and 90% faster than the RX 5700 XT. With the highest preset enabled, the performance benefits remained the same across all resolutions in Shadow of Tomb Raider.

Summary of Average Performance

The RX 9070 XT outperformed RX 7900 GRE by 28% across seven games at medium settings. At 1080p, RX 6700 XT improved by 80%; at 1440p, by 96%; and at 4K, by 113%. For people who still have an RX 5700 XT, the boost was usually over 150%.

The RX 9070 XT was around 25% faster than RX 7900 GRE and almost 100% faster than the RX 6700 XT when set to extreme. The increase over the RX 5700 XT was 160%.

Taking Inflation Into Account

When you factor in inflation, RX 5700 XT jumps from $400 to $510. RX 6700 XT's value advantage increases to 15%, and RX 7700 XT's to 34%. RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 GRE are quite similar, but the RX 9070 XT is 22% greater than the GRE.

Final Thoughts

Looking at the last six years of Radeon GPUs priced around $ 500 US, RX 9070 XT offers the best value and the biggest generational improvement in its price range. RX 5700 XT was a good deal for its time and cost less. Still, when you factor in inflation, RX 9070 XT offers far better performance, more memory, and more features, such as updated ray tracing and FSR4 support.

RX 9070 XT remains the best cost-per-frame alternative, as it is 10–15% faster than RX 9070 when both variants are offered at MSRP. But if prices go up, RX 9070 XT may once again be the better deal, depending on where you live.
