How Early FPS Innovation Influenced Today’s High-End Game Visuals?

Nvidia's RTX 70 series, which started with the RTX 2070 in late 2018 and ended with the RTX 5070. The comparison shows what Nvidia delivered with each iteration and how the RTX 5070 stacks up against its predecessors in terms of performance, value, and long-term value.

What I thought of the RTX 5070 at first
We looked at the RTX 5070 before and thought it was not very pleasant when it first came out. The main worry was that the 12GB of VRAM would still be used, just like the RTX 4070, even though newer games, ray tracing, and upscaling require more VRAM.
A 16GB setup seemed better at $550 US. The RTX 5070 is better than the RTX 4070, but how does it compare to the RTX 3070 from 2020 and the RTX 2070 from 2018?
The first step in testing Call of Duty Black Ops 6's performance is to use the basic preset. The RTX 2070 averaged 109 fps at 1080p. The RTX 3070 achieved 161 fps, a 48% improvement over the RTX 3070. The RTX 4070 was 41% quicker, while the RTX 5070 added only 3% more. The 3070 stayed about 57% ahead of the 2070 at higher resolutions.
The 4070's lead over the 3070 grew to 34%, and the 5070's average fps increased by 7%, while its 1% lows rose by 23%. The 2070 dropped to 44 fps in aggressive mode. The 3070 hit 81 fps (84% faster), the 4070 hit 113 fps (40% faster), and the 5070 hit 119 fps. The same scaling continued to work for 1440p and 4K.
The performance of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
The 3070 was 60% faster than the 2070, the 4070 was 35% faster than the 3070, and the 5070 was 10% faster than the 4070 at 1080p on low. The pattern stayed the same at 1440p. The 2070 averaged 67 fps on the high preset. The 3070 was 54% quicker, the 4070 added 23%, and the 5070 was 22% faster than the 4070. The difference grew to 26% at 1440p and 45% at 4k.
How well does Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered run?
The RTX 2070 ran at 88 fps at 1080p and 65 fps at 1440p on the medium preset. The 3070 was almost 60% faster at both resolutions. The 4070 was around 30% faster than the 3070, and the 5070 was about 10–15% faster than the 4070.
The very high preset required more than 8GB of VRAM, causing serious 1% low problems on the 2070 and 3070. The 4070 and 5070 were the only ones that worked well all the time, and the 5070 was about 10–13% faster.
Performance of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
At 1080p, the RTX 2070 averaged 87 fps with the medium preset. The RTX 3070 was 53–55% faster, the RTX 4070 was 22–25% faster, and the RTX 5070 was 31% faster than the 4070 at all resolutions. The 2070 got 52 fps at 1080p on the Ultra preset; the 3070 got 80 fps (54% faster); the 4070 got 25% faster; and the 5070 got 28% faster. The same scaling worked at 1440 p.m.
Rainbow Six Siege Performance
The RTX 2070 achieved 189 fps at 1080p and 125 fps at 1440p on the medium preset. The RTX 3070 was 49–53% faster, the 4070 was 27–32% faster, and the 5070 delivered 22–26% more performance. When set to Ultra plus, the 2070 ran at 117 fps at 1080p and 74 fps at 1440p. The 3070 was about 50% faster, the 4070 about 30%, and the 5070 about 20%.

How well Space Marine 2 works
At 1080p, the RTX 2070 got 65 fps with the medium preset. At 1440 p.m., it got 47 fps. The 3070 was 66–70% faster. The 4070 got better by 26–27%. The 4070 was slightly faster than the 5070 at 1080p, but only due to CPU constraints. But at 1440p, the 5070 was 25% faster, and at 4K, it was 29% faster, giving it 71fps.
The hyper setting still affected 1080p results; thus, 1440p was the main focus. The 2070 averaged 39 fps; the 3070 averaged 66 fps (70% quicker); the 4070 averaged 24% better; and the 5070 averaged 28% better.
How Shadow of the Tomb Raider Works
The RTX 2070 achieved 119 fps at 1080p and 86 fps at 1440p when set to medium. The 3070 was 57% faster at both resolutions. The 4070 added 24–28% more speed, and the 5070 was 26% faster than the 4070.
At 1080p, the 2070 ran at 102 fps, while at 1440p, it ran at 72 fps. The 3070 was 55% quicker at 1080p and 57% faster at 1440p. It also ran at 62 fps in 4K. The 4070 was 24-32 percent faster than the 3070, and the 5070 was about 25 percent faster than the 4070.
Seven-Game Averages
The 3070 was 55% quicker at 1080p, 59% faster at 1440p, and 62% faster at 4K than the 2070 on low-to-medium settings, according to the geometric mean. At 1080p, the 4070 was 31% better than the 3070; at 1440p, it was 27% better; and at 4K, it was 24% better.
At 1080p, the 5070 added 14%, at 1440p, it added 20%, and at 4K, it added 22%. The 3070 was 57–68% faster than the 2070 at high to ultra settings, depending on the resolution. The 4070 was 27% to 33% faster than the 3070. At 1080p, the 5070 was 16% faster; at 1440p, 20% faster; and at 4K, 23% faster.
Cost-Per-Frame Study
The RTX 3070 cut the cost per frame by 40% at 1440p compared to the 2070, not accounting for inflation. Because it was more expensive, the 4070 reduced the cost per frame by only 8% compared to the 3070. The 5070 reduced the cost per frame by 24% compared to the 4070. After accounting for inflation, the 3070 grew by 43%, the 4070 by 22%, and the 5070 by 28%.
Context for Generations
The RTX 3070 was the biggest improvement in the RTX 70 range since the last version. When you factor in inflation, the RTX 4070 and RTX 5070 look better, even though their raw performance gains are modest. The 5070 is less expensive than the 4070; however, it only improves performance by 20%, while the 4070 improves performance by 30% over the 3070.
VRAM is still a problem. The RTX 3070's 8GB memory didn't hold up well over time, and the same is true for the RTX 5070's 12GB. Some new games are already pushing their VRAM limit.

A Comparison with Other Radeon Options
The RTX 5070 was available for as little as $500 500US when we tested it. The RX 9070 is priced a little higher, usually 5–10%, and in a test of 23 games, it performed roughly 13% better at 1440p. Both yielded equal costs per frame. The RX 9070's 16GB of VRAM is better for long-term use.
At the same time, the RTX 5070 offers better upscaling quality thanks to DLSS4 and better support and performance for heavy ray tracing. But the 12GB of VRAM limits its performance in demanding RT scenarios.
Final Thoughts
The RTX 5070 and RX 9070 are still very similar, and which one is better depends on how much they cost and how easy they are to find. The RTX 5070 excels at upscaling and ray tracing, while the RX 9070 offers more VRAM and performs better in many scenarios.
Compared with earlier RTX 70 models, the RTX 5070 is a better value than the RTX 4070. Still, its performance, VRAM capacity, and long-term prospects are not as good as the step-change uplift the RTX 3070 brought.
