Shipping records and packaging leaks suggest Steam hardware distribution preparations may already be underway behind the scenes.

As more shipping details, possible embargo dates, and pictures of the packaging for Steam Frame and Steam Machine show up online, rumors about them keep growing. Even though nothing has been officially confirmed, recent news hints that hardware announcements are on the way.

In the past couple of days, there have been leaks of shipping information and a possible embargo date. A massive amount of game consoles and VR headsets (classified as virtual reality devices) are being sold into the US, reports say. This has sparked even more clamorous speculation about the final stages of launch preparations.

There are also a few photos online of what is said to be Steam Machine packaging and a faceplate box. The photos are very close-ups, no doubt to avoid showing identifying details, but they seem genuine. They haven't made any official announcement, but it's a second sign that hardware distribution may be underway.

This window will announce reservations and pricing information. This window will advertise reservations and pricing. One of the most significant statements comes from a recent post predicting that we will receive hardware reservations and pricing announcements sometime this week, between June 22 and June 30.

Valve previously said that the products would be available during the summer of 2026. If the reported timeline holds, news may come before June is over, with deliveries expected sometime during July. This would put the launch in good time for the previously-announced “summer release” period. So far, we must wait for official confirmation, but the timeframe seems to align with what Valve has announced.

Units are Reportedly Being Provided for Review

The leak goes on to say that reviewers are getting Steam Machine and Steam Frame units. The report also details what is included with Steam Machine. The package is said to include two mounting brackets, a Steam Controller, and the Steam Machine. Regardless of the final cost, a controller could be useful to the entire package.

The official Steam Machine price hasn't been announced yet, but many people hope it'll be competitive with current consoles. With the flexibility and freedom of PC gaming, more people might be inclined to try it if it's available alongside competitive systems on the market. One of the major unknowns is pricing.

A lower entry level would make the system more attractive to those seeking an alternative to traditional gaming platforms while still enjoying the Steam ecosystem. Finally, the official will set the prices, and then the hardware will be compared with other available gaming options.

Steam Frame Remains a Key Priority

The prices for the Steam Frame are still unknown, too. Despite questions about RAM and storage, there's still strong interest in the device. While prices are important, many are still looking to buy, and affordability is a factor in wider adoption. There is also the belief that Steam Frame could boost VR usage. VR is still a small market, and if Valve releases a new piece of hardware, it might spark more interest in VR.

The two pieces of packaging that came out of the box and were mentioned were the mounting brackets. Installing brackets for a gaming console would sound like an odd idea; you'd think it's used mainly in the living room. Their intent, however, becomes clearer given that the Steam Machine can also run on the desktop.

The leak also mentions “S4 faceplates,” but it's unclear whether more will be shipped with the phone. The standard faceplate comes with the device, but it could be offered as an optional purchase at launch or later. Currently, there is no official information from Valve about any accessories that can be customized. The other factor mentioned in the report is an embargo that could be lifted after June 23.

If true, it looks like hardware reviewers will be able to start providing coverage for both Steam Machine and Steam Frame in the near future after that date. It is unclear if both products will be covered at the same time. The date is rapidly approaching, and as it gets closer, more information may become available through hands-on impressions and reviews.

It's still unclear if the Steam Machine and Steam Frame will be available at the same time.

The interest both products show is roughly equal, and neither seems more important than the other. As a result, it could make sense from a marketing and consumer perspective to launch them together. Until official announcements are made, we won't know exactly how the company intends to release the schedule.

One thing people should consider if they intend to buy either device is having money in their Steam account in advance. Whereas payment services, credit and debit card processing might be required during the high-demand launch period, having the funds in hand can make the checkout process easier. Once bookings open, you can complete the transaction immediately without waiting for payment or authorization.

There have been cases where buyers lost hardware due to payment providers' delays during launch periods. By setting up your account in advance, you can minimize these potential issues. The actual pricing is still unknown, so it is hard to determine how much to save. Once Valve provides pricing information, though, expect it and be ready to reserve it.
