Revealed back at PDXCON 2018, Age Of Wonders: Planetfall is the first title in the turn-based strategy series to take to space. It takes place after the collapse of the Star Union which sees various factions emerge in an attempt to reclaim power. Thanks to a reveal stream earlier today, everyone can now see the title in action.

The first hour of the stream was dedicated to gameplay in what was described as an alpha build specifically built for the reveal. We got to see the commander customization process and hear a bit about the backgrounds of two of the factions - the Vanguard, human expeditionary forces and the Kir'ko, insectoids that lobotomized their Hive Queens to obtain freedom. A third faction comprised of former empire trading houses and named the Syndicate was also mentioned, albeit only briefly.

Each faction has its own specific traits such as weapons group and favorable terrain. They can also choose a Secret Technology that tweaks the faction's gameplay in certain ways. Some of them act as multi-stage doomsday weapons and are tied to a victory condition. It's also not necessarily easy to know which Secret Technology a player is using, which could potentially spice up multiplayer matches.

The map is separated into sectors which can house different factions, resources and other interesting things such as landmarks. Adding such sectors to your colony is how you expand and grow your cities' power. Although Age Of Wonders: Planetfall will focus a good deal on combat, diplomacy is also an option, opening up quests from other factions on the map. Attacking someone unprovoked will result in a hit to your reputation, which is affected by other actions as well.

Plenty other details were given during the reveal, including a look at how combat works and the fact that multiplayer will support up to 12 players. You can head over to the Paradox Interactive Twitch channel to check out the VOD, which also inlcudes the Q&A segment after the initial hour of gameplay. Age Of Wonders: Planetfall is set to launch in 2019 on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
