Prices continue to rise in the handheld gaming PC market, and a new retail listing may have leaked pricing considerably higher than expected for Lenovo's upcoming Legion Go 2, powered by AMD's Z2 Extreme chip with SteamOS. For example, the SteamOS version was first revealed at CES 2026, priced lower than the Windows version. Still, a subsequent merchant listing suggests it could be priced much higher, leading us to question the device's value proposition in an already costly market.

Around six months ago at CES 2026, Lenovo officially announced the SteamOS version of the Legion Go 2 Z2 Extreme. At the time, numerous reports highlighted Lenovo's plans to launch the handheld in June 2026 with a retail price of $1,199.

According to coverage from VideoCardz published on January 7, 2026, the Legion Go 2 with SteamOS was expected to launch in June at $1,199.

The device was described as using the same AMD Z2 Extreme hardware configuration as the Windows model, which launched at $1,349. The lower pricing was partly due to using SteamOS instead of Windows, a move that aligns with expectations for cheaper mobile gaming PCs.

Hardware was expected to remain largely unchanged between the two versions, aside from probable firmware modifications and button label changes for SteamOS-specific features.

A Best Buy item that has just arrived could offer a peek at Lenovo's revised pricing strategy. But it's not without its caveats. Appears to be available only via the Best Buy app on mobile, not in standard web browsers.

If you try to visit the listing through a browser, the page does not exist, but you can still access the product details through the mobile application. Similar situations have occurred in the past, with product listings appearing before official announcements.

According to the listing, the Legion Go 2 Z2 Extreme running SteamOS is priced at $1,679. The listing also specifies 512GB of storage, which appears lower than what many expected based on earlier announcements. Some might remember that the original configuration was tied to 1TB of storage at the announced price point; however, things may have changed throughout development due to rising production costs and changing market conditions.

As always, take the information with a grain of salt. Limited availability means the listing is not verifiable and placeholder pricing still exists. At the time of writing, there are no other stores with comparable listings.

That $1,679 price tag is a big jump from the original $1,199 announcement, but not quite a shocker given how Lenovo has been pricing its handhelds lately.

The Windows version of the Legion Go 2 Z2 Extreme originally launched at $1,349, but current retail pricing has climbed substantially. Best Buy now lists that same model at approximately $1,999. The 2TB configuration can exceed $2,500 depending on availability.

Pricing varies by region and retailer, and some listings can still be found between $1,500 and $2,000.

Nevertheless, the overall trend points toward significantly higher prices than those seen at launch. Given those increases, it would have been difficult for Lenovo to maintain the originally announced $1,199 price for the SteamOS version.

Even so, a SteamOS device would generally be expected to remain less expensive than its Windows counterpart. The lower 512GB storage capacity could also help reduce costs relative to the Windows model.

Even if the final retail price settles at $1,679, it would still be a substantial amount for a handheld gaming PC. That kind of price could make the SteamOS version of the Legion Go 2 a harder sell, especially among those who were attracted to the initial bargain pitch.

Price inflation has already been dramatic in the wider handheld market. Several high-end gaming handhelds have been launched at price points that many consumers deem high. Premium price tags are also predicted for upcoming products from MSI and ASUS, while Lenovo has raised prices on many of its handheld lineup.

So, the prospective pricing of a Legion Go 2 SteamOS variant hints at a bigger trend across the whole handheld gaming space. Whether buyers will shell out $1,679 for a SteamOS-powered Legion Go 2 remains to be seen, but the leak hints that affordable options are getting harder to find in the high-performance handheld market.
