Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is finally coming back to life after years of breakups and restarts. The most recent sign is that it has been rated rating by the ESRB, which means the game is almost done. The "Rating Pending" sign was used in marketing materials and the Nintendo eShop for months. That has now been changed to a clear Teen rating, which follows earlier approvals from South Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee.

Ratings don't give away exact start dates, but the times they're given are rarely a coincidence. Now that the ESRB has spoken out, people are getting more and more excited that Nintendo may soon go beyond vague promises and announce a release date.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is still set to come out in 2025, which was confirmed in investor meetings and most recently in Nintendo's March trailer. Still, some fans are wary of this project because it has a long and troubled past. Retro Studios took over development again in 2019, and rumors of delays past 2025 are still going around.

Nintendo usually bets the most during the holidays. Some people in the business think that Metroid Prime 4 will be a big game in late 2025, along with Kirby Air Riders and Donkey Kong Bonanza. Nintendo could get the most out of both the existing Switch install base and the future successor by spreading out releases between October and December. With more than 150 million platforms in use, the company probably won't pass up the chance to use Prime 4 as both the last game for one system and the first game for the next.

The ESRB's rating also mentioned "in-game purchases" which made things even more interesting. This quickly led to rumors about downloadable content, expansion packs, and maybe even the ability to play with other people online. Nintendo has said before that this label can be used for a lot of different things, even cross-generational upgrade choices or online features that are tied to Nintendo Switch Online.

This means it might not have anything to do with microtransactions or paid DLC. Still, the comment makes me wonder. Could Metroid Prime 4 come with modes or features that aren't expected, besides the single-player campaign? Nintendo hasn't given any Metroid Prime 4 update or said anything, but the lack of clarity only makes people more interested.

Fans are also keeping a close eye out for signs of a Metroid revival in general. Since Metroid Prime 1 was remastered, a lot of people are hoping that Prime 2 and Prime 3 will also be remastered. A September Nintendo Direct might be the best time to make such an announcement.

The company has a history of releasing old games in secret, like Pikmin 1 and 2 just a few months before a new major game comes out. Nintendo looks ready to take the Metroid series to new heights in terms of sales, whether Metroid Prime 4 comes out on its own or as part of a bigger reboot.

One thing is for sure: the company has put a lot of money into this game. Metroid Prime 4 is one of Nintendo's most anticipated games in decades, thanks to six years of re-development, changing hardware and huge fan demands. Every step forward, like getting ratings approvals or new marketing materials, makes it feel like the long-awaited reveal is getting closer and closer.

The question still stands: when can players finally put on Samus Aran's helmet again? For now, the signs point to a start around the holidays in 2025. But Nintendo knows how to throw shocks at you. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is closer than it has ever been and when it comes out, it could change the series for a whole new group of players.
