Modern Warfare 4 is only days away from its full multiplayer launch, but you don't have to wait until release to get a better idea of what's coming. While many players are still working through the single-player campaign, data miners and hackers have been uncovering content that wasn't supposed to go public until later this week. From new multiplayer maps and DMZ challenges to weapon prestige rewards, there's already a lot to look forward to before the game's different modes become available.
October 19 is expected to bring a major progression update for Modern Warfare 4, with details about the shared progression systems, overall prestige, and camo challenges. DMZ is also expected to receive attention as Activision prepares to launch the mode in early access on October 20. Multiplayer will follow on October 23, giving players a busy week ahead as they move from the campaign into the game's other major offerings.

Before we get into the leaks, Call of Duty released another Forged in Valor episode as part of its latest COD Endowment promotion. The episode features Kyle Carpenter, a service member who will be available as a fully playable operator when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.
The new footage offers a closer look at Carpenter's operator skin and what appears to be a second variant included in the bundle. It also shows brief glimpses of weapon blueprints and other cosmetics that will come with the pack. More details about the complete bundle are expected later this week. Activision also released a small patch to fix missing names in the campaign credits.
Although it isn't a major update, the fix ensures the affected names are now included.
For players preparing to jump into DMZ, Activision confirmed that an early-access update will be available across all platforms by 9 A.M. Pacific on October 19. Early access will then begin globally at 10 A.M. Pacific on Tuesday, October 20, for players who digitally preordered or prepurchased Modern Warfare 4.
Some players may still try to access the mode early, but server restrictions should keep them from getting too far ahead of the official launch. More importantly, your player level and weapon XP earned in DMZ will carry over into multiplayer and Warzone Season 1. This means you could encounter players who have already reached Prestige 1, 2, or even 3 when multiplayer opens on October 23.
Early access has already seen its share of technical exploits. A keyboard-related glitch reportedly let some PC players break out of the campaign build and access multiplayer menus before launch. That exploit appears to have been fixed, but not before players entered Ground War matchmaking and saw what happened when they tried to join matches.
Reports suggest some players were kicked out and subsequently shadowbanned.
Streamer Huskers also reportedly gained access to private multiplayer lobbies through an invitation, allowing him to show off menus that weren't officially available yet. He was also reportedly shadowbanned after displaying the content during a livestream. With the game launching in just a few days, these exploits aren't worth the risk. Even if you manage to access a few menus early, you could face penalties before the full experience is available.
Meanwhile, Modern Warfare 4's campaign appears to be receiving a positive response on Steam. The game is fast approaching an overwhelmingly positive user review score, suggesting players who bought and played it enjoyed the single-player experience.
Steam doesn't represent the whole Call of Duty player base, especially when you consider console players. But its growing importance as a PC gaming platform makes it worth watching for reception. What makes the campaign's performance particularly interesting is that Activision hasn't pushed the recent beta's player numbers the way it has with some previous entries.

A strong campaign reception gives Modern Warfare 4 a promising start ahead of its multiplayer and DMZ releases. The upcoming modes could further improve the game's overall reception, although complaints about the return of skill-based matchmaking when multiplayer launches could eventually affect those reviews.
Players also have several opportunities to see the game before its official release. Events are taking place worldwide, including a recent event in Germany where select streamers could play multiplayer maps not included in the beta.
One of the maps shown was Mumbai, which has received very little public gameplay footage so far.
The brief glimpse reveals a colorful environment that expands on the locations players have already encountered in the campaign. Although multiplayer and the campaign share some settings, the layouts can differ considerably so that familiar locations may offer very different experiences in 6v6 matches.
A Monster Energy launch party is also scheduled for Los Angeles on Friday, October 23, giving attendees a chance to celebrate the release. The game has also improved in other areas, with the Gunsmith menu receiving a noticeable polish compared to its beta appearance.
The updated menu is more detailed and has more personality, suggesting the extra development time let the team refine parts of the experience before launch.
One of the biggest map changes comes with Shoot House. Data miners have allegedly found a Korean-themed version of the fan-favorite map. This isn't just a return to the original environment; it changes the scenery while keeping the familiar layout. This version seems to do that.
That approach could be welcome news for players who prefer remakes with a visually different look. Recent Call of Duty entries have sometimes brought back classic maps with relatively few changes, so a new setting could make Shoot House feel fresh even if its layout remains familiar.
The map may not be available at launch, but it could arrive during Season 1. Hackers have also shared footage of Shipment, another popular map already expected to return shortly after release. If the current expectations hold, both maps could be available by Season 1 Reloaded in early December at the latest.
Shoot House has already appeared in Modern Warfare 4 through Kill Block, but its appearance in traditional 6v6 multiplayer is reportedly different. This means players could encounter familiar layouts across different modes without necessarily seeing identical environments.

DMZ is also getting a substantial marketing push.
MrBeast is reportedly filming a promotional video for the mode alongside Call of Duty creators such as TimTheTatman. MrBeast made Call of Duty videos years before he became widely known for challenge-based content, so his involvement could help introduce the new mode to a broader audience.
Beyond the promotional material, data miners Alix and CSB have revealed several details about DMZ's progression systems and rewards. One discovery suggests players can prestige their operators a total of 100 times to complete a challenge.
That doesn't necessarily mean using the same operator for every prestige. Instead, the challenge may have several active-duty operators, letting you spread your progress across your roster. For example, you could have 10 operators and prestige every 10 times, which could eventually meet the requirement.
Another reported problem is opening the Deep Vault Gate on X1, a separate DMZ map from Hajin. X1 is supposed to offer an experience similar to Building 21 from the original DMZ, but its release is reportedly set for some point in Season 1.
The game also reportedly has a compensation system for players affected by cheaters. One message uncovered by a data miner reads, "You were determined to have been affected by a cheater. Please take this pack as our apology."
The message suggests that players who lose a deployment to an undetected or unremoved cheater could receive a DMZ kit as compensation.
It's a positive sign that the devs are considering how cheating could affect the experience, especially given the problems the original DMZ faced. It could be a sort of insurance policy, giving players compensation after an unfair encounter.
Other discoveries suggest that DMZ will let you replay completed story missions through a randomizer option. Instead of manually selecting a mission, you may be able to use the randomizer to jump into any mission you've already completed.
The mode will also reportedly feature gear with an ultra-rare rarity above Legendary. This new rarity tier wasn't available in the original DMZ and has only been hinted at through recent promotional images.

Players looking to complete the mastery camo challenges will have plenty of grinding ahead.
The Cyro mastery camo reportedly requires 1,000 kills against Tier 3 or higher enemies. For Ripple Tide, you need to extract two lieutenant dog tags during a single deployment on 25 separate occasions. Helio, meanwhile, requires 2,500 kills using a max-level character with a Legendary weapon.
Multiplayer's camo requirements also appear to demand a significant amount of time. Mercurial Drift reportedly requires you to earn 10 kills in a match on 250 occasions. However, that doesn't necessarily mean playing 250 separate matches, since earning more than 10 kills in one match could count toward multiple completions.
Polyatomic Reforge requires 250 instances of getting three kills without taking damage, while Orion Reforge requires 250 instances of getting five kills without dying. Both challenges will take dedication, though Hardcore could make the former easier.
Weapon prestige is another area where the latest leaks clarify the progression system.
According to CSB's findings, you unlock weapon prestige after reaching a weapon's maximum level, and you apparently only need to prestige each weapon once. After that, you can keep leveling it up to level 250. Additional weapon prestige rewards are reportedly available at levels 73, 150, and 250, although their exact contents remain unknown.
The system may also explain the return of the Exclusion Zone camo from Modern Warfare Remastered. The camo was previously mentioned after COD Next, with the original description suggesting it would be tied to Prestige Mastery. However, recent leaks suggest it could instead be tied to weapon prestige.
If that's the case, reaching specific weapon mastery levels could unlock different Exclusion Zone stages for each weapon. The system reportedly includes four different camo stages, giving you several options to use on a weapon as you progress through its prestige levels.
This would also make the system less demanding than the weapon prestige approach reportedly planned for Black Ops 7, where players must prestige each weapon twice to unlock its rewards. In that system, some camos are shared across weapons, while others are unique before becoming available for use on other weapons.
Modern Warfare 4's approach could instead focus on unlocking the Exclusion Zone stages separately for each weapon.

More information should arrive in the coming weeks, particularly as Activision explains the progression system in greater detail. Competitive players also have something to look forward to, as several CDL camos have already appeared in the game's menus. Some look better than others, but Activision expects to reveal team packs before or around the start of Season 1. Ranked Play could also arrive before the end of the year, followed by the first major in-person competitive event, expected in February.
With the progression reveal expected on October 19, DMZ early access beginning October 20, and multiplayer launching on October 23, Modern Warfare 4 is heading into one of its busiest weeks yet. The latest leaks have already revealed plenty of content to chase, from redesigned classic maps to rare gear and weapon mastery rewards. However, players will have to wait for official confirmation to see exactly how everything works.
