Here’s a guide on how to beat Death in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

Fighting Death in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse can feel like hitting a brick wall. He hits hard, fills the screen with vertical beams, and has periods where you straight up cannot hit him.

Being around Level 50 gives you enough breathing room to take a few hits, but the real trick comes down to reading his scythe and keeping your cool.

Recommended Loadout and Setup

You can finish this fight with standard weapons like a single sword, but sub-weapons make a massive difference.

Bring the Holy Cross. It cleans up flying projectiles quickly and lets you deal damage from a safe distance in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

Equip any relic that boosts your attack power right after casting a spell or sub-weapon. Tossing a Holy Cross and immediately running in with sword slashes will melt through his health bar.

Turn your game volume up. Death has loud audio cues right before his biggest attacks that tell you when to dodge before the animation finishes.

Reading Scythe Attacks & Early Phase Strategy

For the first half of the fight, stick close to Death. His scythe movement is your primary visual tell. Whenever he raises or turns the weapon, step back or prepare to jump.

Early on, his primary melee swing is just a single swipe. If you stay right in his face, hit him, and dash backward when the scythe pulls back, you can punish him after every swing in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

Watch out for his life-drain grab. If you see him readying an attack where he lunges forward without swinging the blade, back off immediately. Getting caught in it will strip your entire health bar down to almost nothing.

Dodging Vertical Beam Sequence

About four times during the battle, Death summons a sequence of vertical beams from the sky. This is usually where players wipe out.

The worst thing you can do is back yourself into the corners of the arena. Instead, fight in the center and use the floating platforms.

When the sequence starts, bait the first set of beams toward one side of the room. Quickly dash back into the middle area, then jump between the platforms while using your air dash to stall and reposition in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

When the fifth beam appears, make sure you jump up high. That fifth beam targets the floor level, so being airborne keeps you completely safe.

Each time he repeats this phase later in the match, he adds more beams to dodge. The plan stays the same: keep moving, stay off the floor corners, and wait for the final beam to pass.

Dealing with Invulnerability & Phase Two

Once Death drops below half health, the rhythm changes and he gains several temporary invulnerability windows. You cannot hit him during these transitions, so focus entirely on defense rather than swinging blindly.

He also upgrades his standard swing into a two-hit combo. The follow-up sends a tracking beam along the floor. Do not dash away along the ground. Jump straight over that second beam, land, and then punish him during his recovery frames.

Whenever Death throws out floating bone projectiles that circle around the arena, do not try to run away from them. Turn and hit them with basic attacks to destroy them on the spot in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

Final Phase: Safe Projectile Clearing

When his health drops into critical range, Death starts backing away and firing bursts of ranged projectiles.

Walk toward the far edge of the arena so you have time to see them coming. Throw your Holy Cross straight into the cluster.

The cross will chew through all the incoming projectiles while traveling through to hit Death behind them. Jump over any stray shots that slip through, keep throwing crosses, and finish him off at range in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

FAQ

Q. Why can't you damage Death at certain points during the fight?

A. Death triggers brief invulnerability periods in the second half of the fight, especially when transitioning phases and starting new combo strings. When your attacks stop connecting, back off, save your stamina, and prioritize dodging until he finishes his animation.

Q. What level should you be before fighting Death?

A. Around Level 50 is the sweet spot. It provides enough health to survive a missed jump during the vertical beam phase and gives you enough raw damage to burn through his health bar quickly with the Holy Cross.

Q. How do you avoid Death's life-drain attack?

A. Watch for when he stops swinging the scythe and lunges forward empty-handed. Back away immediately when you see him move toward you without a weapon swing, as getting caught in that grab strips nearly your entire health bar.
