Path of Exile Soars Again: Mercenary League Sparks Comeback For POE 1

Over 180,000 players return as the new Mercenaries League revamps loot, builds, and multiplayer—and yes, Twitch drops are back, too.

Path of Exile, a game that has caught the attention of many gamers, is back to take over the gaming industry; as we know, Path of Exile 2 is still in Early Access, showing no signs of a release date. The developers Grinding Game Gears have now made a comeback with Path of Exile 1.

The latest Path of Exile expansion for POE 1 came out on June 14 and quickly showed why the game is still the best in its genre. On the first day, over 180,000 players swarmed in at the same time, causing server queues to burst and login problems that are usually only seen on the day of a major MMO launch. That number is likely to go up over the weekend, especially since everyone is talking about the game.

The Mercenaries League is the main part of this new expansion. It adds a whole new layer of content with its new Renown system, rebalanced builds, changes to loot, and Twitch drops that last until June 29. It's the league that's been most aggressive in years about both making changes to the rules and making life better for fans, and it's working.

The league's main idea is based on mercenaries, but with a clever twist. In every zone now, players will face a mercenary. You have to beat them in a one-on-one duel before you can hire them, steal gear from them, or send them away. A new system called "Renown" was added to encourage you to interact with them instead of ignoring them. It rewards you for being consistent.

You get Renown (up to 3 ranks) every time you beat a mercenary. This makes it more likely that Infamous Mercenaries will appear. These are elite versions of mercenaries that always drop a unique item and are the only way to get new Infamous Modifier Items. Ignore a mercenary after checking them out? You lose a level of Renown. You have a reason to fight and, more importantly, to care.

The game Grinding Gear Games didn't end with Mercs. They've changed everything about how loot scales in multiplayer. Adding players used to mostly make items rarer, which sounds great until you have too much junk. Now, parties get more gold and money, and junk loot is scaled down. This makes what you see on your screen more consistent.

Uniques now work right when there are more than two players, so playing with a group doesn't just make more noise; it actually gets you better rewards.

Mercenaries now count toward party difficulty scaling as well, which makes fights tougher but also more profitable. That, along with Anointed Passives that depend on gear and Link Skills that work on mercenaries adds a new level of strategy and teamwork that wasn't there before.

As expected, the launch also brought a lot of fan-made builds and theory crafting. If you're new or haven't played in a while, Righteous Fire Chieftain is still the best place to start, especially with Pox's help. Even though boss kills take a little longer, it's tanky, easy, and not too strict.

Some other important choices are:

The Explosive Concoction Slayer and the Poison Concoction of Bouncing Slayer are both strong and good for beginners.

Wave of Conviction – got a big boost from Nova tagging.

Now, Bladefall of Charus works like a real-life version of Righteous Fire.

Dark Pact of Charus, which has a huge 100% life-pool-based damage spike for ignite.

Heavy Strike based on ints is now surprisingly possible.

Facebreaker Gloves now do 1,000% more damage when not armed. Yes, 100%.

Need more help? A rumor has already gone viral for making a funny and useful build flowchart that tells you what to play based on how bad you want your experience to be.

The new parts make things more comfortable and stable. In POE 1, a new pause feature has been added. This is something that only happens in certain situations, like when full-screen windows are opened, lag is detected, or now Syndicate interactions happen.

Settlers Town, which people loved, is also back, but this time, it has already been built. Even though you still have to hire and pay your workers, the most you can have at once is now 5. This makes management easier and makes it easier to see how to move up.

You can't bring a level 90 merc on a level 20 alt, either. This helps keep the balance across all experiments on the account.

Do not worry if you are new and do not know how to start. The community will help you. Here are a few important points:

In FixFaxer's Master Spreadsheet, you'll find a "guide to rule them all" that includes leveling routes and more.

Cyclone's Campaign Layout Guide: For people who want to get the most out of early progress.

Stevie's Endgame Flowchart: This is a great way for both new and old players to get used to POE's complicated systems.

How to Make a Rag – You don't need this if you already know what it is. If not, just ignore it.

Also, thieves. Yes, the way Bandit Rewards work has changed. Don't just kill them all like you used to. They only give one passive point now, so give your choice some thought.

From now until June 29, Twitch drops will give away exclusive cosmetic items every week. You can get them if you watch participating streams and, if you want to, support a streamer by buying two subscriptions (Prime subscriptions don't count).

Also, this is a big deal: all cosmetics from POE 1 will eventually work in POE 2. Your hard-earned gear won't just look good in this league; it will be useful for a long time.

Not long ago, Mark Roberts did an interview in which some surprising news was shared. The most important change is that POE 2's Spectre Resummoning system will be added to POE 1. That won't just work for specters, either—it will work for all permanent minions, which is great for summoner builds.

Asynchronous trade is another experimental feature that is being talked about. This would allow you to buy items from a player's hideout who is not online. If put into action, it would completely change the often frustrating trading scene in POE. The only thing stopping them? Bots. GGG wants to make sure that this system won't turn into an automated nightmare if it goes live.

Path of Exile 2 is the focus of everyone's attention, but GGG has made it clear that POE 1 is not just a beta waiting room. With smart changes, powerful new build options, and interesting league mechanics, POE 1's Mercenary League shows that the game is still going strong and then some.

If you've played action RPGs before or are just looking for a new one, now is the time to switch to this one. Be sure to bring your loot filter with you.
